The worst part of communism is that you can't actually explain to people who weren't there what it was actually like. I was very little, but I still remember the extreme forced poverty, which I thought was normal. You couldn't buy jeans, a car, a phone, tobacco, or much of anything, even if you had money. You needed to be special, or have some kind of favor to even put your name on the waiting list to maybe get a vehicle at a much later date.

Everything was based around barter and bribes, and despite how totally illegal this was, everybody did it, and only those who hoarded got punished for it. Things that you take for granted were luxuries you could only get from tourist centers, or sent from across the border, both of which were very illegal things for us to make use of. I see idiots in my country now who are somehow nostalgic for the time when you had to wait 6 years for the state to supply you with a really shitty car, and their excuse is always something idiotic, like 'everybody used to have their place.' These people weren't even around then. I was barely around, and I'll shoot anyone who makes attempts to bring that shit back.

My family went through a similar experience. Nepotism is worst under communism. All easy jobs are given to the relatives of the people running the communes. The distribution of necessities isn't based on actual need but some arbitrary amount they make up. They don't care if you have young children to take care off or if you're pregnant mother. You're force to buy overpriced food in the black market to feed yourself.

Even food that you prepare or find yourself (fish or hunt) is confiscated entirely whether they feel like it. It doesn't matter if you're baking something for your mother's birthday or if you're really hungry.

Given the political climate, they always had to pick someone out to lynch (regardless of whether or not they did anything wrong) as a way of letting people vent their frustration (the equivalent of a Roman bread & circus).
