Why not neighboring NH in the White mountains (still pretty high property taxes and cost of living, but relatively speaking the government at the present is significantly less pozzed than VT) or move to East Kentucky, West Virginia, Tennessee where you will get the same mountain vibes without communists trying to take your shit. "Quality Build" actual meaning: "rock-solid reinforced concrete with superior insulation".

Also, there's no point having a house in the middle of nowhere, with the exception of it having bus stops and train stations in the less-than-10-mins-on-foot radius. Because those 2-3 times/year you can't/don't want to use your car/boat, you still have to have choices.

Plus, there's no point in having lots of room if you need to spend insane amounts of money to have it warm/cool/clean. Also, the bigger the storage areas, the more shit you will hoard. "Comfy" also means "manageable", "easy to maintain", "weatherproof", "burglarproof".

Finally, there's no point in having a plot of land larger than you strictly need. Your doggo will be happy with a 200sqft garden. There's only a single exception: you have some 60+ft waterfall giving you water and electricity.

Also remember that you only own what you can protect even when sleeping. There's no such thing like a comfy house in any nigger-infested area.

Energy-wise I have a solid fuel burning stove which also heats the water. Once a year I buy a trailerload of wood and a trailerload of turf (peat, traditional fuel that smells amazing) from some local acquaintances for about €250 total. I also have an oil fired boiler which is really only used to heat the water for the shower when I wake up.

Food-wise I'm growing onions, carrots, potatoes, shalottes, cabbages, tomatoes and peas on about a quarter acre and a poly-tunnel. Next year I'm thinking I might add a bee box or try and build a dark poly tunnel for mushrooms.

Check the standing of the house with the local government. To see if the house has any permit or zoning violation. Get the house inspected by a reputable home inspector before you sign the contract of sale.

Check the demographic change of the neighborhood you're buying. If it is getting darker, your home value will decline.

Check your surrounding area for any structure, building, or future construction that might impact your property price. If they're building a homeless shelter in your block, your home value will plummet. If they're adding a new bus route to your area, price may go up, etc...

The best deals are short sale or pre-foreclosure. Auctions and for sale by bank tend to only have homes that have been damaged by the evicted owner, out of spite. You need connections to get the best deal, as houses going into foreclosure tend to be bought up by friends or people close to bankers.
