Why did BTC hold at 6k for so long?

Because that's what it costs to mine BTC for most people, and they were reluctant to sell at lower prices since they would be losing money by doing so. Instead, they were waiting for the price to rise again in order to break even. Since this didn't happen, eventually they had to cash out to cover costs and they dumped the price.

Since we're still in red territory for miners I would expect the price to fall a bit more before most miners give up and a new balance is reached. After that we might be able to grow, but not before, since it is impossible for BTC to grow in price with such a negative pressure from the excessive number of miners.
