An option is the right to buy or sell a stock (or anything else) for a certain price. A call option is the right to buy a stock, a put option is the right to sell a stock.

If I BUY a call options for XYZ @$10, and the stock jumps up to 20, I can exercise that option and make an immediate $10/share profit on it (though in reality I would just sell the option at a profit).

On the other side of this trade is the person selling the option. They collect a fee in exchange for selling someone the right to buy shares at a certain price.

So let's say someone sold me a $10 option and it went up to $20. What would they do? Well, it depends.

If they were selling a "covered call", they would already have the shares set aside to give me if I chose to exercise the option. But some people don't have the shares, they sell a "naked call", which means selling the option without having the shares to back it up.

If you sell a naked call, and the price jumps from 10 to 20, you now have to go out into the market and spend $20 per share to buy, and then turn right around and sell to me for 10, at which point you immediately lose 10 per share.

Selling naked options is always a dumb idea because you have unlimited risk.

I would be more interested in how his client agreement was written. Normally, when people invest in a corporation, they are not on the hook for losses above their initial investment. You can lose everything, but not more.

I think with an LLC it's different, and you can be forced to put in more money, but that's only for the investing partners, not the client.

It's just an odd setup. If you invest in a mutual fund, for example, you can lose all of your money; but vanguard doesn't come knocking at your door demanding more money if one of their traders screws up and nukes the fund.

Basically what happened was that natural gas went up a large amount. Then this guy sold a ton of naked calls (which are contracts to buy something at a certain price without actually holding that asset) thinking that this was the top and that he would take advantage of people thinking it would go even higher. Natural gas then went on to shoot up even higher causing his account to have pay these people in an asset he didn't even own. So his entire account got liquidated plus margin called for an additional amount.
