Anyone else fall for the "tailor your CV and cover letter" meme? I spend at least an 1 researching the company, then 2 - 3 hours carefully tailoring my CV and cover letter for the job. So far have received 54 rejections over the past 3 months with this approach.

I didn't, I do the spamming method. Applied for 200 in the last 3 months, but 130 of those were in the last 5 weeks (I ramped it way up, I was more focused on learning new skills for the first two months so I'd be better qualified). Been getting two phone interviews per week recently. Had one follow up (in-person) interview and another one coming up.

Are you getting many interviews with your approach, or just all rejections?

All rejections with no explanation.

It should be regulated as a punishable offence (for a public company) to reject application for a position without divulging appropriate reasons.

More importantly we need something disruptive to capture on-job learnings beyond MBA/MS elitist shit.

There is no need to tailor your CV. I never heard of anybody doing it as a CV is supposed to be a sum of all your experiences/skills. It's the "objective" part of your application that shouldn't depend on the place you're applying at. You're actually supposed to tailor your cover letter though, you're expected to introduce yourself, give a motivation for applying and explain why you and the company would be a good fit.

Weird, sounds like you're just not qualified for the jobs you're applying for, or there's something with your CV. Maybe have someone look at it?

I just have two versions of my CV that I always use, and I don't even bother with a cover letter unless it's required. If it's required I just write something very short and generic. I also apply for jobs all over the EU, so that really opens up the pool of jobs. I wouldn't find shit if I just looked in my hometown.

I find it's way more common to get no response rather than a rejection. I think it's partly to avoid discrimination lawsuits, and also because it's time consuming to give feedback and they don't give a shit.

What type of positions are you applying to?

Data science is booming right now. If you can't even get an interview there is something seriously wrong with your resume. Obviously there is no way for us to help you without seeing your resume. What are your grades like? Done any internships?

I'm doing the same. Have a PhD in math (nothing to do with data science though). What are your actual qualifications for data science ("STEM" is pretty vague). I did a data science "specialization" on Coursera and I've been having some success with my applications. Just started another specialization on deep learning.

Same boat op hey lets import millions of shitskins who once in management positions only hire their own people. All boomers and immigrants should be slaughtered.

Unless its a high margin / highly specialized field I doubt the recruiter spends more than a couple of minutes looking at the CV. I wagecuck as a chump in executive recruiting and I barely look at that shit for high skill/in demand professionals.
If it's a low skill to mid career job with plenty of candidates, you're putting a bunch of effort into something that the recruiter will only glance at.
