Deathmatch edition

>I'm new to the stock market, what stocks should I buy?
Before you buy anything, make a brokerage account and read investopedia articles and/or the books in the OP list. If you don't have a broker, you can't buy stocks, and if you blindly buy things without understanding how the stock market works or doing any research on the individual stocks you're buying, you will lose money and it will be entirely your fault.

Absolutely not. Powell is adamant that the plan is going to stay on course. They are part of the deep state and want to give the democrats a boost by killing the market rally which Trump has claimed to be his. If you really want to gamble do it with 10% of your income.
Do it in the sector you're familiar with, if you work in tech you know more about it than any of us here. If you work in retail, you know more about it than outsiders.
/g/ and r/hardware called the AMD buy when it was $1. So it is possible, it just needs serious research. If you can't put the time in, ETFs will give you the best bang for your buck.

the last graph showed returns when all stocks were sold and replaced with new random stocks every month

and yes in reality the equal weight thing is hard to pull off, since everything must share a least common denominator with your most expensive stock, (one AMZN gets randomly picked means you need to have $100,000+ in your account for example, one BRK.A means you are multibillionaire )

but diversity wins out over indexes most of the time, as long as you hold instead of trying to be le epic day trader

there are too many people in this thread who go all in on 5-6 stocks then wonder why they dont survive downturns

random picking trumps most TA strategies too

and of course it all depends on what time period you are investing for (or testing a trading method for)

>In the early seventies trading was not a job you went into to make large sums of money. It was a good stable profession like selling insurance or banking. And if trading was boring then the Index department at the Exchange was downright comatose. We all know about indices, give em to your nephew when he turns 16 and then when he's thirty he makes a hundred dollars. Yawn. Indices were losers. That is, until John C. Bogle came on the scene at Vanguard
>You see, John didn't know it yet, but he had already changed trading forever. He had just one simple idea...
>The Exchange Traded Fund. Or public security E.T.F.
>What is that?
>Here's how it works. You've got your average bluechip portfolio, 3% per year. Boring, safe, small pay off. But when you have dozens of them all bundled together... Suddenly the yield goes up and the risk is still low cause it's a bluechip, and what bluechip isn't stable? And because the risk is hedged these securities allow for people with not so perfect strategies to invest. So you're making money, and you're doing a good thing.
>John and his band of foul mouthed stock traders took a sleepy department and made it the most profitable on Wall Street. Pretty soon bonds and savings were almost inconsequential to the big funds. They were doing 50, 100, 200 billion in traded funds and dozens of other closed funds a year. And America barely noticed as its number one indsutry became boring old stock trading. Then one day... almost forty years later... in 2018... It all came crashing down.
>In the end, John Bogle's Exchange Traded Fund mutated into a monstrosity that collapsed the whole world economy. And none ofthe experts or leaders or talking heads had a clue it was coming. I'm guessing most of you still don't really know what happened.

>This is a basic traded fund. The original ones were simple, dozens of bluechip stocks bundled together and sold with a guarantee from the US government. But the modern day ones are private and are made up of layers of leverage, with the 1x highest rated getting paid first and the lowest, 3x rated getting paid last and taking on insolvency first. Obviously, if you're buying 3x levels you can get paid more. Hey, they're risky, so sometimes they fail...
>But somewhere along the line these 3x and 2x levels went from a little risky to dog shit. Where's the trash? I'm talking rock bottom investments, no NYSE verification, penny stocks... Dog shit. Bankruptcy rates are already up from 1 to 4 percent. If they rise to 8 percent, and they will, a lot of these's 1x's are going to ZERO.
>And that, my friends, is an opportunity
>You're sure of the math?
>RKG is my quant. Look at him, he doesn't even speak English properly. He won a national math competition on /biz/. Yeah, I'm sure of the math.
>So you're offering us the chance to short that pile of blocks? How?
>With something called a "Long Put". It's like insurance on the security. And if it goes bust you can make a 10 to 1, even 20 to 1 return. And it's already slowly going bust.
>10 to 1? 20 to 1? There's no way.
>But no one is paying attention. No one is paying attention cause all the brokers busy get paid obscene amounts of fees selling these funds. Basically, I'm standing in front a burning house and offering you fire insurance on it.
>How can the leveraged funds in these pools be as bad as you say? They wouldn't be legal.
>No one knows what's in these funds. I've seen some that are 65% bluechip that are actually full of 95 percent biotech shit with picks like LCI.

well right now im not fully in SPY/QQQ, i also have about the same market value in SSO/QLD

so i am effectively 1.5x leveraged in both SP500 and NASDAQ, I am willing to acccept the risk and am buying and holding for years. Both these 2x ETFs survived without problems the last recession so they are a good candidate for holding currently through any market flucations, this seems like the best risk/reward in your 20s to me but I am simply a bit unsure and wanted some guidance

aren't leveraged ETFs kinda crap for holding long-term (years) though, no?

>> No.11580653

>>11580586
in my opinion, yes. much better suited for trading short term. i would not hold for any real duration.

and why not? all 2x made it through the last recession and have made the returns they promise, yes they are risky but thats how you generate returns...

i wouldnt hold 3x through recessions though, they havent proven taht ability yet

>> No.11581095

>>11580553
look at 2x leveraged ETFs if you had indeed held them through 08-09, they have made everything back and more

dont 'swear off' something just because during the bad times its scary, its designed to be that way, the returns will come, the world economy always grows

im not advocating to be all in 3x leveraged, but 1.5-2x depending on your age is something you should look into

in trending markets that may perform OK, in choppy markets it's not so much the case.

here's the performance of SSO and SDS during volatile times.
