Blood in the streets edition

>I'm new to the stock market, what stocks should I buy?
Before you buy anything, make a brokerage account and read investopedia articles and/or the books in the OP list. If you don't have a broker, you can't buy stocks, and if you blindly buy things without understanding how the stock market works or doing any research on the individual stocks you're buying, you will lose money and it will be entirely your fault.

Why does the fed even raise rates? Every single time they do it the market tanks. Having high rates to fix a recession is stupid because high rates are what cause a recession in the first place. Rates should be kept near 0 always and allowed to go negative if required.

I have been thinking about this lately during the crash. Saving for a retirement that you might never live to see is sort of stupid. You could die in a car accident within 5 years. The vast majority of retirement wealth is donated to charity or to ungrateful spawn. The social net will not let you starve when you're old anyways. You do not need any retirement savings. You may be right, but the market's already been selling hard for weeks and futures haven't broken either this morning's lows or yesterday's lows (yet) even after GOOGL and AMZN results. Money managers may decide it's already low enough to start buying for year end. Their last quarter came in fantastic and they wouldn't want a 10% loss on the year end report. China, Italy and Brexit are the big obstacles now. If any of these get settled or if futures starts pushing above the downtrend and today's high (green lines), there won't be very many bears fighting it. Just some thoughts.

October 31st: The Federal Reserve, which has been propping the markets up since the 2008 crash with zero-percent interest rates and quantitative easing, will dump ~$30 billion in United States Treasuries (yield spike) and Mortgage-Backed Securities (market slump) in one go. I work in politics. My best educated guess is that R’s definitely lose the House. They’ll be lucky if they have 50.1%. However, they will likely hold, or even gain in the Senate. That’s just my two cents. And don’t trust national polls in this type of election. In order to get a good read you have to look at individual House of Representatives elections at the precinct level, and even then there’s a bunch of toss-ups. Take it with a grain of salt.

i realize this isn't /adv/ but

my anxiety over the economy and the future of the country is ruining my life. i get the feeling we're at the end of some long run of prosperity and are about to slide into a future of increasing people fighting over dwindling resources, and there's an increasing lack of leadership and long-term planning to deal with issues. and the scariest thing of all to me is it seems like there's an increasing amount of people who want to see shit burn. i don't see a lot of will anywhere to doing things constructively. the media and political landscape is so loud, shrill, and devoid of deep thought or discussion. was it always like that?

i have a great job and a lot of money and rather than plan for the future i'm just drifting through life waiting for the end. why have a family or a long-term home, instead of a go-bag and enough ammunition and water to maybe live to see the other end of societal collapse.

Trust me it's legit. All you gotta do is read the fine print. It's all in the merger details. Filings with the SEC and all that boiler plate. It's in a pdf. This is how it goes; once deal is done (early next year), all assets not going to Disney after the two companies join will be spun off ("New Fox), then current Fox shareholders will be given Dis Shares in place of Fox shares. How many Dis shares or what ratio of Dis to Fox all depends on how many Fox you got and what Disney's closing price is at time the deal is done. Bottom line; You will be coming out ahead. Even if you get 5 whole Dis w/partial 6th, thanks to Drip, that partial will round up over time.

My city just levied a 1% income tax to pay for boomer pensions they can't afford. This hike isn't enough for solvency, just to keep payments going for another 8 years.

I could go on for hours with examples to show that the "Bernie generation" is the first in American history to be worse off than their parents. I have a house, a well-paying job, a nice nest-egg, some skin in the game so to speak. I would with the greatest pleasure give it all up to join a militia and hunt the fucking boomers that drained this country dry to keep the golden years going.

If they showed some humility and admitted they built some unsustainable systems (pensions, social security) and ruined the economy to pay for RVs, I might be inclined to work with them to change the system instead of cheer for it's destruction. But instead I get them turning out in droves to vote for tax hikes so they can keep their pensions rolling in.

If Disney takes a dive to under $100 per at closing time your fox would equal 0.60% of 1 Dis Share. Under the deal you'd wind up with 15.6 new Dis Shares + 50 current. Assuming the 0.33 ratio. Then there's this; say deal is almost a day away. Some "fake" news spreads that sends Dis Stock price tanking to under $100 per. What do you do (Dis Fox Execs)? Nothing, Deal's almost in the bag, they would not call it off so your new Dis shares are now at the 0.60 ratio

The big, big problem with the polls was people ignoring correlation between them...if you treat the polls as independent, that's where you get the 99% chance Hillary wins absolute stupidity from. I believe the majority of white women voted for Trump, and these samples tend to be primarily white. The bigger sampling issue is that there is a bias towards more population dense/less rural areas.

Though there were political scientists who predicted Trump would win (using different data sets than polling)

Again, not my field or something I care about, but polling data actually is predictive to a degree--most people are just absolute retards when it comes to statistics (see the majority of this thread).

This has the potential to swing the whole direction of the day if it hits or misses by a large enough amount to cause hype or panic. It's laggy. Works okay on weekly scale if you want to be conservative, just don't front run the bullish cross. If have seen bullish impending cross stop and bounce right the fuck back down too many times. Bearish Tron bike maneuver. So wait until the lines actually cross. Problem with this is you will miss a lot of the bottom end bounce as well as likely sell on the late side if you use it as a sell signal as well.
