I thought Japan had successfully assimilated eastern and western principles/philosophies while growing as an economic powerhouse during 80s/90s. Despite having some big names in automobile and electronics industry, it's mostly dilapidated economically and its rich tradition is decaying at an alarming rate.

Did Japan adopt a western version of capitalism without first adapting to its culture ?

Thank god it didn't adopt its culture or it would be fixated on GDP and enable mass immigration to boost it.

Instead Japan actually has grown very strongly over the past few decades based on GDP *per capita* and it will continue to grow strong that way.

https://www.forbes.com/sites/timworstall/2014/09/05/japan-is-one-of-the-best-performing-economies-of-the-last-decade/

98% of Japanese graduates land a job. Because there isn't a fixation on "correcting" a declining population (read: a declining GDP (read: a declining tax base)) this means that young japanese will each inherit far more per capita than their boomer grand/parents ever had, while having very low unemployment and rising wages all while protecting their unique culture from "enrichment".

Even in terms of GDP, it's still the 3rd biggest in the world.

The Bank of Japan pumped and dumped their
whole economy with cheap loans in the 80's and they never recovered properly from the crash. Then in the 90's China stole a heap of their manufacturing jobs which kinda fucked everything even more.
