I'll offer a different opinion from yours. It's not clear that this current brouhaha will really dent Nike's stock prices in the longer term (months from now.) The thing is, the general public has the memory of a fly and very little impulse control. For those who are upset with the Kaepernick advertisement, will they remain upset a few months from now and, if they are, will they actually be able to follow through and buy a different company's products in lieu of Nike products? I am pessimistic that the the public will behave that way. This is different from the Target incident because the Target incident subjected their customers to real risks (sexual assault or public indecency in the bathrooms.) This is just an annoying, preachy, misguided ad campaign.

The only way to really hurt Nike is to create a massive advertising campaign to convince Nike customers to try competing products (Puma, Fila, Under Armour, etc. have an opportunity here.) A properly constructed campaign will get a lot of people to try competing product while they are still angry and, if they discover that they like the competing product as well as or better than the Nike product, that will cause a serious erosion of Nike's business.

We'll have to watch the next few weeks and months to see what Nike's competitors do and what the general public does to persuade unhappy Nike customers to try a competing product.

Finally, I'm talking about Nike's stock price in the context of the general stock market. Stock prices are very elevated at the moment and if we have a general correction or crash, it goes without saying that Nike's stock price will fall in sympathy. It might be better to talk about Nike's stock price as a paired trade with an index. On that, I'm so far unconvinced that Nike stock will greatly underperform an index.
