If money is your central goal then money will be your central issue, but the rest of your life can be normal.

If power is your central goal then money is a non issue because you can have as much as you want to have, but the rest of your life will not be normal.

How do you feel about this?

There's a limit to the pleasure money can offer you within a lifes span, but powet can always be greater, and so only the rich can truly both desire and potentially acheive great power. For example, Arabian Gulf princes have all the luxuries they could ever dream of but still enter into power dynamic fueds.

What's your definition of "powerful"? It isn't magic... enjoying yourself while rich as opposed to being anxious while rich won't suddenly make you powerful. When it comes to politics, I imagine relative wealth compared to the other players plays a big role (money runs the world etc etc), so I"d assume being anxious about how well you are financially would be benificial, as long as you're doing it in the healthy entreprenurial fashion.

Power is an abstraction of human relationships. What I mean by power is the ability to have others carry out your will. I've known a lot of people who thought that politics and power were a sham, because it boiled down to money. In my observation the opposite is true. Those who could have others work their will could make money if they wanted to. Those who simply had money were burning it to try to mimic what someone with power could do at a rate that simply didn't make sense. If we're speaking in the language of trade, then power has a favorable exchange rate to money, or can simply work it into a system of exchange without hassle, whereas money trades very unfavorably to get the things done that power gets done.

if you need power, you also need money, and enough to build connections in the first place.

You have that sideways. No powerful person needs money that they can't have. Plenty of people with money need favors or influence that become too expensive.

That's true, I agree and think the same, but here you're not talking practically anymore. Sure, if we were powerful, it would become much easier to generate money, but we should first consider how a person can become powerful to begin with. The world isn't Game of Thrones, even if you were born into royalty, without wealth to your name you won't find many people willing to carry out your will. In democratic societies like the USA, its possible to become president based on hard work as opposed to wealth, but even then you still have your hands tied by the multiple institutions that actually have and make lots of money. Money runs the world etc^9

and you got to the key of the issue, money has replaced what was natural leadership based on actual superiority. The lowest of society in ancient times have used their cunning abilities to not only increase their wealth but make money the absolute god of earth.
Restore social status climbing based on merit and hard work and not wealth, and those who truly deserve it become the new wealthy, even if not necessarily material

you dont want stupid people to control, you want to get rid of stupid people and/or improve them so they are not stupid anymore. You want a society of strong, smart, capable and independent people that cooperate to make it even better. Thats if you care about your country and your children
