It's a part of the narrative Erdogan created in order to gain Turkish people's support by making this whole crisis look like a David vs. Goliath situation, where the US bullies Turkey for not obeying its orders.

Turkish economy has been a huge bubble fed by the construction industry and they've been trying to stave off the inevitable collapse. Trump and Pence are playing right into his hand by overstating the situation.

They even kidnapped two Greek Generals in order to have leverage in negotiations with the EU and other nationalities residing in the region. What happened with Brunson is just one of the things Edrogan has done in order to solidify his power. More fuel to the fire is that 40% of Turkish corporation fixed foreign currency denominated debt payments are due in the next 3 years. A weaker lira will mean defaults up the wazoo.

Turkish banks convinced everyone to borrow in USD/Euro due to lower interest rates, so about 70% of corporate debt is denominated in foreign currencies. Turkey is absolutely fucked, and the collapse will be brutal. There is simply not enough power in the central bank to prevent a fallout, like they did in 1994, 2001, and 2008.
