They token is used to stake by node operators for reputation and as collateral, as well as for users of the network to pay node operators. Link isn't a scam, but off-chain smart contracts like in Codius where you choose who to trust to host your program make a lot more sense than Ethereum. Banks who are interested in smart contracts will never care about the illusion of trustlessness that comes with a public blockchain or token.
