Going to a top 3 Business School, and I've been reading a bit of mixed info lately about how to dress. Some people say to dress extremely well, and that brand names do matter, so only certain ties and only certain socks and shit, but others say it does not matter, just wear something neat and have good hair as well as smell.

I'm fortunate and I've always worn good clothing (expensive shirts, ties, suits, etc) and I'd like to continue that in university, so I was thinking it is time to have a bespoke suit made for me, well 5 or 6 of them. My dad recently went to Hong Kong on business and he had this really nice full silk suit made, and it feels amazing! I was thinking of taking a trip to Hong Kong myself this upcoming March Break and having them made there as well, but I'd like to ask you guys a few questions first, regarding 'self image' at a top 5 school (this is top 1 or 2).

The cost for this school is around $50k per year, which includes tuition and housing, but there are also a lot of recruiting parties, launch events, dinners, and many more business related events and so on.

BASICALLY

How should I spend my money on my image in business school, at the best school in my country?

I'm thinking of a nice car (BMW M3 or M4 or M5, or a Mercedes Benz AMG CLA, C, E, or something similar from Infiniti or Lexus)

I'll also probably buy 5-6 bespoke suits, 5-6 dress shoes, 10-12 ties, 10-12 pairs of socks, and like a few casual pairs of jeans, khakis, and shirts.

I'll also need some pairs of sunglasses, and I do wear glasses right now and I already have two pairs (Prada and Louis). For the sunglasses I'll probably pick up a pair of prescription glasses and get transitions lenses built in, with the green color instead of blue or brown.

Anything else I should buy for appearances? What about a money clip? I have a gold one right now (gift from Dad) but I'm thinking of getting a carbon fibre one, or maybe get one made that's carbon and gold or carbon and gold and silver?

Should I carry more than one wallet? How many cards should I carry with me? I currently have an AMEX, RBC, TD, and PC Financial cards (they all have concierge service, and offer similar rewards) So should I just cut down to one card? Or 2? Which one would be the most prestigious? AMEX I'm thinking.

Any other tips for how to present myself? I'm aiming to do a Bachelor of Commerce while doing a Bachelor of Mathematics in Statistics and Applied Mathematics.

I'll also be living on Campus, so is there a certain type of food I should eat as a Business student? Should I spend money on Starbucks? Or just drink any coffee?

Also watches, how many should I buy, which brands? I like this Rolex Tevez A LOT, but some people have said it's too dark, but I kind of like it because its so dark. What about Breitling, is it any good?

Lastly, am I thinking too much into it? Should I not even care? Am I being too paranoid?

Thank you for taking the time to read, hopefully there's something you can help me out with!

I can say that you should steer clear from transition lenses because they look childish and goofy when all of a sudden you walk into a building with "sunglasses". That's just my opinion OP, and also what school are you going to attend?

This is good bait. But if you really came from this kind of money, you'd know how to carry yourself in this setting.

If not bait, do not wear a suit every day. Dress well, but not like an autist. Well-fitting clothes look better than any logo, and the best stuff is unbranded or subtlety branded anyway. No brogues, square toes, or mirror shines. And don't be a prick.

No one will care about your car too much but Audi is safe for appearances, albeit expensive to maintain. Mazda is a good balance between price, quality, and comfort imo.

Why do you want 5 suits? One grey and one navy blue will cover everything but weddings and funerals, and frankly the navy is optional too.

5-6 shoes? You a chick? And why are you counting socks? One dressy leather black pair, one dressy leather brown pair, one pair of converse (optional), and something to exercise/work out in.

Green sunglasses are hell to match with your other clothes and accessories, so youre just undoing everything else. Black or dark blue, please.

Money clips are retarded. No. Same for tie clips and cuff links. Dont.

One wallet is enough, though you could make a case for one black and one brown maybe. AmEx is not prestigious anymore, except Centurion of course. One discover with a cool design and one metal card - try the Chase Ritz Carlton, Marriott, or Sapphire Preferred - will turn heads while having decent perks. Citi Prestige is not especially prestigious but has great travel perks if you do that.

You should not need more than one or two watches, and you do not want a fancy one. People, even interviewers, will think you are a tool, especially if it is flashy. Citizen has some good value ones that look more expensive than they are without showing off too much. Remember that old money doesn't have to peacock, so showing off looks insecure to the people that count. One silver and one gold face, ideally with one metal strap, one black leather strap, and maybe one brown leather strap, is the max you should consider, and even that is overkill imo.

If you're going for image only, it doesn't matter what engine/whatever you get. As long as it's new, expensive, and sports a mercedes/audi logo.

I'm curious, how do you come from so much money, yet don't know about image? Did you just sit around in sweats and post on the chans all day?

>> No.936749

>>936736

I come from money but my parents never like splurged, and its not much money I come from, but its more than enough to sustain this image I guess

Anyways I never really cared about clothes and shit, like I went to a public school, so kids wore Ecko, Crooks and Castles, and Aeropostale, I usually wore Nike gym clothes, Levis jeans, Polo colar shirts, adidas socks, some simple Nike shoes, like Nike Cortez or someshit

I wore pretty "simple" clothes, but they were definitely more expensive than other peoples "brand name" stuff.

When I got to high school it changed a bit and kids were starting to wear Polo, Nike, and Levis and shit. So I upped it a bit and started getting into True Religions, Louis shirts, Tommy Bahama, etc and started buying more expensive shoes, but I still kept to the simple look, but just things got a bit more expensive.

Whenever I had presentations and shit though, I'd just go out and buy a suit or something ($200-$300) and wear it for the year, and then next year get something else, I never really bought clothes based on image to show off, I bought things that looked pretty simple but only some people will know how much it costs.

But ya, might come from money but you probably won't realize how much, you'd probably think like $80k-$150k, but its like $300k-$400k range which isn't noticeable

It's like Doctors, they don't over dress or over spend, because it's a public paid job and people will turn on the profession if they see how much these doctors spend.

That's why my Dad I guess wasn't bothered about image and never taught me anything about it

>> No.936777

>>936749
Making an effort to outdress everyone with more expensive clothes doesn't make you look better, it makes you look like an ass.

If you show up to class every day in a 5k suit, driving your Audi, I'm not sure how to put it other than you're going to look like a massive tool.

Just keep it casual like you were before and you'll be fine. Your dad knew that putting on a garish display is not necessary, and in some cases can actually be harmful. It's probably a good idea to have a suit to use for when you need it, but don't go overboard. You're what, 18 years old? You've got a bit of time to figure this out, and dropping 70k on shit just for the "image" isn't the way to do it.

one of the good things about going to a top university is the friendship group you make there which will stay with you over the course of your career

what you seem to want to do is actively harm your chances of making friends by dressing like a massive faggot while you're a student - who the fuck is going to want to sit next to the weird kid in the suit during their maths/statistics lectures

also, if buying a bespoke suit get a proper one, don't get a cheap one from some Hong Kong tailor, it is a false economy. Wear it to interviews and on your internship don't wear it to class. If money is an issue there are off Savile Row tailors in London that will make you a high quality one for a more reasonable price. It is London you need to go to for a suit and specific tailors there not designer crap like Armani etc.. Also you're not going to get 5-6 done in one go, it requires multiple fittings for one suit so don't kid yourself.

>It's like Doctors, they don't over dress or over spend

Top fucking kek you clearly don't know many doctors. Go find where the specialists park at your local hospital. Try and tell me the cars they're driving aren't examples of "over spending"

>> No.936804

>>936785

By over spending I don't mean a Mercedes S class. I mean a Lamborghini Murcielago in the winter, as your "Winter beater"

We have 4 cars right now, my dad drives an S class Mercedes, and my mom drives a Range Rover Sport. The other two cars are just daily cars that they drive to work and I drive sometimes, they are an Lexus GX and an Infiniti QX60.

So, we drive expensive cars you could say, but they're not "overly" expensive, in the sense that they don't LOOK expensive, but they are.

>>936779

Yeah, but the other good thing is, you get to make friends with other wildly successful people, and their parents. The kid that wears a hoodie and sweats to class isn't going to make friends with the son of a hedge fund manager as easily as someone who dresses the same way as the son of the hedgefund manager.

By the way at the school I'll be attending, the daily dress code required is a 'business casual' which means nice shirt, nice pants, and no jeans. We also learn in a case-based way, so we're always working with different people and different professors, which means we'll have to make impressions on a daily basis, which is why, more $ = better, how I see it anyways.

The suits are custom made for you, they do all of your measurements and it takes 2-3 weeks to get one actually finished. For 5-6 pairs I've already checked with them, it will take 8-9 weeks. That means I'd have to fly over to HK, then do my measurements, fly back in 3-4 weeks to have a second measurement done, and then another 3-4 weeks later I'll be by to make some final changes.

I'm 20 actually, (took some extra time in high school, because I was travelling quite a bit to conferences for around 1.5 years)

Who said anything about a $5k suit? I was going to spend around $2k max per suit!

Business casual doesn't mean a bespoke suit.

You'd honestly be better served by just making sure you've got great fitting basics and are in good shape.

You're an undergrad. Being likable and fun is going to dictate your friends more than your dress. Not everyone there is going to have autist focus on being the best.

Hell yeah, I remember my first interview as a junior trader back in the days. It was my future boss, a lady from HR and my poor self sitting in a conference room. The folks went over my CV just quickly and asked some random questions about it, when the boss guy suddenly said: OK, anon. You seem to be qualified and all, but you know, we don't care too much about the mindset and training of our future employees, instead we choose our candidates by the brand of their socks. So would you mind taking off your shoes and show us your toe-garments?
