In my area it's mostly just the new home communities that have them, and it's like $30 a month normally. My house from 1955.

It has no insulation in the walls. It has some cellulose insulation in the ceiling but thats it. Roof is made of tarpaper instead of proper concrete shingles. The metal overhang on my back porch has too shallow an angle to allow water to drain properly, so it pools and runs through the cracks. The doorframes used short 1" screws instead of proper 3.5" screws, which matters if someone is trying to kick your door in. The sewer pipe is leaking and gets clogged full of roots once a year. The windows are single pane glass and no proper slide for lifting it; its just wood on wood. The walls presumably have lead paint as that was the norm back then.

Not real impressed with the build quality of my 1955 house.

We have older building here, too - and to be habitable, they have been upgraded/reinforced over the years, too. Most of the brownstones in NYC have brick and stone facing, same for any of the older cities in the north-east.

There is no inherent superiority to brick, other than being cheaper in countries that don't have ready access to lumber. Most early UK housing was wood and wattle, with straw roofing, because that's what was available to them.

Here in the US, each region has different needs/styles. You do see brick houses, especially in snow country. You see more adobe and stucco on the west coast. It's rare to see wooden siding, because vinyl is cheaper and lasts longer.

In the UK, brick is handy, because of the one quality of the UK - it being fucking damp all the time. Scotland is even worse. And I suspect Japan has far stricter and "best" housing codes, anyway.

Solving the problem of housing purchases will require more creative and yes, nativist action. I would recommend tripling non-resident/rental/investment property tax rates (including on AirBnB-purposed homes). So, if one is not Aussie or a permanent resident, they pay 3x the property tax on AUS real estate of all kinds. If one does not live in a home owned in an area lacking affordable housing, one pays, again, 3x the tax (certain classes of vacation home exempted for AU citizens only, and houses kept in a child's name exempt if passed on to that child when they are of age). If one rents out/lets the property - and AirBnB cases included - (unless specifically as part of an affordable or wage-indexed program overseen by a housing authority), one pays 3x the amount. You can effectively kick Chinks, Arabs, housing speculation hedge funds, Jews, Russians, etc. out of housing by making it serve its primary function through taxation and otherwise fill your coffers with foreign money if they try to hang on or sue their way out of the tax. I realize that many of you fucks are going to complain about "muh prospective future apartment business" or "muh cousin's rental homes" but that just makes you part of the problem.
