No, those services are handled by a smart contract. Nodes are for data. Please read the white paper. section 2.1:

"As an oracle service, ChainLink nodes return replies to data requests or queries made by or on behalf of a user contract, which we refer to as requesting contracts and denote by USER-SC. Behind CHAINLINK-SC, ChainLink has an on-chain component consisting of three main contracts: a reputation contract, an order-matching contract, and an aggregating contract."

I don't understand this, doesn't the user need to specify the data he wants you to fetch?
How could you possibly know what thr users want if they don't point it out to you when creating a smart contract that requires off-chain data only they know they need for the contract to execute?

Disclaimer: I have a decent LINK stake.

I played with smartcontracts and wanted to feed real world info in it, I just used Oraclize to fetch the data.
It was really easy, literally: a variable, an update function, and a callback.
Now I will admit that I would have wanted to use link because of the decentralised aspect.

People today can write smartcontracts with real world data, brainlets could have already started churning our 'revolutionary' new dapps or whatever.

Why do you guys think link will skyrocket beyond anything Oraclize could do?

Is it because of the simple GUI? The decentralization? Because there is an agreed upon SLA?
The only answer I have is that it will bring professionals onboard.

isnt it the case that the contract itself specifies which kind of data it has to fetch? the information that youre processing is encrypted so there is no way in you knowing wether or not you just executed contract A or B. this is beyond my knowledge now, but i think you just offer to service certain APIs and the contract and consensus algorithm will decide wether or not your node is chosen among others. not really an expert, sorry for acting edgy :3

>> No.9696248

I would recommend people start their own nodes for main net. The reputation system won't be up for launch and it's been confirmed you just won't get paid if you return bad data/go offline etc. You won't lose your precious links.

Starting a node is easy. If you can't do it just sell now.

>isnt it the case that the contract itself specifies which kind of data it has to fetch?
But someone has to write the contract that specifices this?
Like in the example they made for BTCUSD price, the job pointed the contract to the connect to the Bitstamp exchange API and your node just fetches the data from that feed.
I don't understand the concept of "providing APIs" or "providing data sources" that everyone is mentioning. That's not our job, the user of the network should be either the owner of that data and open it up to the LINK network or use publicly available APIs. I thought the nodes are there to take the jobs that were given to them and execute them per instructions (and the instructions should say what data to process), the user can't just simply ask fetch me X when nodes don't know what X is.

The question is, why are nodes only offering only "certain APIs" instead of having the ability connect to every single one of them (paid feeds excluded). What if nobody is offering the data they want? That's why I think this sounds retarded - leaving majority of the nodes to offer same public APIs.
