Thats funny, because saint thomas aquinas was very liberal and capitalist (and, by extension, lots of scholastic priests). He believed that interests and rates were fair things to practice. He believed that interest was a way to compensate the damages of not having the money. There was only a problem when you profited out of "borrowing money", because it was seem as taking advantage of someone in need.

Also, he said that private property was a human right as well as a necessity for christianity for there would be no way for there to be charity (forceful charity is not charity at all).

The problem was that he was misinterpreted in modern times.
