Yeah that seems like a good mentality. Tim Ferris describes something similar in The 4 Hour Work Week. Figure out how much the life you want to live costs on a daily/weekly/monthly basis and come up with the appropriate amount in that timeframe.

I feel we should drop some science on this stuff. So much that is being said about this and other 'self help' is just utter non-sense. What does science say about getting rich? The rest I would consider noise.
Now for my noise ;) : avoid people that put you and other down like the fucking plague. Try to associate yourself with winner. Constantly ask people what you could do better. Ask them to be honest. Understand that small differences over a long period of time make an enormous difference (its like compound interest).
And then focus on something you believe you can achieve and can make you rich, verify this with someone who's judgement you trust.
