The dividend yield takes the dividend, and divides it by the price of the stock.

A stock with a high dividend yield usually has such a high yield because the stock CRASHED, makes the price (denominator) lower, while the nominal dividend is usually fixed, so the % yield goes up when stocks fall.

The thing is, it's not profitable for a company to keep shelling $$$ on a high nominal dividend if the stock has fallen tho -- so usually when u see high dividend yields, it just means that the yield will probably disappear once they change the dividend back down to a reasonable level.

tldr, no dividend yield doesnt really help.
