The community surrounding DOGE has been pretty good at combating that mentality. Sure, there's likely many of the Bitcoin ilk who are using it just for that, but overall they've been very keen on keeping the currency independently active, making sure it switches hands often. Though it seems actually spending it on stuff still needs more support, because it's mostly just tipping right now. I've seen a few attempts, like a music platform using exclusively DOGE, but I don't know how well it'll do. Certainly interesting to see a cryptocoin with such a lax style seeing so much activity, though.

I'd definitely argue that most of the community isn't just using it for Bitcoin. Go look into the reddit community, as that's pretty much the heart of it. People will buy Bitcoin so they can buy DOGE.

For months or maybe even a year now there have been withdrawal problems on MtGox, from what we've heard people are waiting for 5+ months for their fiat withdrawal to go through.

Recently MtGox froze all withdrawals (yet still accepted deposits) because of a Bitcoin malleability issue where a MtGox customer could make it seem they hadn't received their BTC's so they could receive it twice.

There has been ALOT of speculation on what Gox has been doing behind the scenes, too much to list here. It comes down to if MtGox will be solvent or not and able to actually pay everyone. We'll see.
