OK, so I posted about this last week and got some advice...here's an update:

>I applied for an internal job transfer to a "Senior" position, a few pay grades above my current level.
>I match all their requirements, experience, technical skills.
>I interviewed and they said the loved me and said they would send me the offer ASAP. >When they found out I was a lower pay grade, they removed the original listing and made me apply to a relisted "regular" position at my same pay grade.

If I was an external applicant, they would have no problem matching me to the original job Req. Why the fuck do big companies fuck over internal employees? How do I go about negotiating this?

===from the hiring manage===
Hi anon,
I have talked to my manager. Unfortunately, we cannot give you a promotion since it is off cycle and requires your current management approval.
Intel Policy and ATTD management also does not allow us to have promotion to lure employee to the new role.
However, you can get a mid-year review from your current team.
If you already have multiple EE or O ratings and you starts on our team with immediate EE or O, we will put your previous performance into consideration during next focal review.
Feel free to contact my manager if you have further question.
You should receive the formal offer letter within 2 business day. I will contact you again to see whether you accept our offer or not.

====from a mentor, outside of the company====
It is deceptive to post at Grade 07, find a suitable in-company candidate (currently at Grade 05), have that candidate give his boss the exit notice, and then downgrade the position in both pay (two steps) and devaluated status (dropping Supervisor). Was it not the wage increase (deserved) and the leadership position (appropriate) that drew the applicant to interview? To change this after the fact is a shell game that is difficult to tolerate.

So I should quit and look to move to another company? That's the feeling I'm getting...the only way to advance is to change companies...

Yes. Quitting will let you get into a senior management position at another company with the same reqs

>> No.827160

They whole policy thing is just a way to fuck average joe.

It's fucking hard get what you want but there is example of people managing do dodge the whole pay grid / inter policy thing, but I don't know how they manage to do it.

What I would do:
> Ask to see the manager face to face
> express my surprise and discontent about this letter
> explain that hiring + training some external guy will cost more money and come with greater risk than giving you the promised salary
> you may have to provide blowjob

If you quit without another offer in writing you are dumb as fuck.

>> No.827194

Take the job, do good work, and try to get a good raise at your next review. If you don't get the raise, start applying to new jobs at that point.

To just quit now could end up being a really bad move.

>> No.827206

I would like to play wagecuck advocate on this one. You sound young and new to the company. You really need to put in at least a year or two in your current position before they know they can trust you. Intel is not some fly by night high turnover meat grinder.

I've been working for 4.5 years doing this.

You can't be that stupid to just quit, can you? I'm talking in terms of long term strategy. I've got a position currently. I'm applying for another position in a different business group. If I don't accept the offer, nothing changes. I've got a good job making $100k/year doing my regular engineering in my current group.

We'll see. I wrote them a nice letter, will post it up for you to pick apart if you've got time and no job.

>> No.827265

OP, you would genuinely have cause to take them to labour court over that, not least for false advertising. Intel is notorious for shitty HR policy, you have my sympathy.

yea, I know right? Internal transfers get treated like shit....and once you're in the system, its next to impossible to get any kind of promo unless you're a URM (under represented minority). At least on the engineering side of things. I've got a friend in the Finance business group and she got promo'd twice in her first 18 months out of college, and they get like 8% raises each cycle. Engineers get told to smile and be happy with you're 1.5% raise and a Satisfactory rating.

We are constantly fed the line:
>Work really hard and I'm sure you'll be in line for a promo at the next yearly cycle.
>oh no, there was a lot of really good competition this year. Maybe you'll get it next year...
>if I could give unlimited promos, I'd give it to you, but we are only allowed one promo per group...

As an educated white male, I and my peers are getting shafted all the time....

OP here again
>>827279

Hi Anon –

Thanks for your email.

As HiringManager stated we do not normally promote into a new position.
After reviewing your current performance with your manager my decision is that an out-of-cycle promotion to grade 6 is not warranted at this time.

We would like to welcome you to our team at the grade 5 level and encourage you to hit the ground running and demonstrate grade 6 level performance. Promotability is assessed during the Q1 Focal process. At that time your performance would be compared to your team members in similar grades and rating and promotion decision made.

Regards,
Area Manager

which is totally fucked because the position was advertised as a grade07, Senior position. They interviewed me under those assumptions. Then said they wanted to extend me the offer. Then when they found out I was a 05, they changed the req.

If I were you, I'd find another position at a different company. Preferably a position that has similar req's and pay as the one you originally applied for.

I would express my discontent in a joint email with the boss of my department and the boss of the department you were interviewing for.

I would also start dropping some lines with a new company, cause these guys sound like fags.

Have you considered that, maybe they didn't want you for the position for another reason, that they have chosen not to reveal, but this internal pay grade thing is a convenient excuse as to why you are not getting the job?

>> No.827541

>>827535
No, they definitely want me. I just got the offer letter...but its a straight lateral move, with the promise of 'work hard and maybe we'll promote you next year'

>> No.827585

Oh.

I'd call their bluff. Don't do anything, nothing.

Say, "I'm only accepting this position under the original offer terms, and will not accept any changes or other requirements".

I bet they balk.

That's what I'd do.

"Your personality and the amount of work that you showcased is quite impressive"
"I think you have a great future here"
"we cannot offer you a mid-year promotion w/ the offer"
"The majority of this group are Grade07, so hypothetically, if you perform at the same competency as the rest of the group, then that is outperforming for a Grade05 and shows that you might be promoted next cycle"

take this position since it come with higher responsibility than your actual, then use this position to find an equal position in another company, then ask them to give you a raise or you gtfo.

Yep. I think so too. So I'm in a tough situation then.

>My wife wants us to leave Phoenix soon, hopefully end of next summer.
>If I take this new position, I'll have the "TD Process Engineer" title and a good shot at a promo next cycle
>if I stay, I'm very good at my regular "Process Engineer" job, will just work through it, no idea what the promo prospects are
>my current role allows for a lot of work/life balance. Hell, I'm heading to Europe for 2 weeks next month. I can take a lot of vacation days, the job is easy
>the new role will be a lot of new learning, hard work, less work/life balance
>usually a professional should commit 2 years to a new job role. If I move to the new position, I can't really quit and leave Phoenix next year.

ugg...TLDR: Wife wants to leave PHX, I want more $$
- If I stay, i'll have an easy job, no idea about promo, can quit easily to move to another company.
- If I take new position, harder job, less work/life balance, professional etiquette requires committing to 2 years, good shot at promo

She's tired of the hot summers. I'm the majority breadwinner, so it's really up to me and where I can find engineering work.
>stay out of CA: too much taxes, high Cost of living, shitty politics, regulation
>no New England: I just don't like it that much. I grew up in farm country NJ. I don't want to go back.
>No Seattle...or anywhere that's pushing $15 min wage really

Honestly, we've got a lot of places in mind:
- Denver area
- Pacific North West
- Kansas
- Lousiana
- TX (houston is shit though)
- the south (NC, SC, TN)

Really, I just need to go somewhere where I can get a good Engineering job (BS, MS ChE). I've got a German dual citizenship too, so we are totally open to overseas.

We are both <30, no kids, so our risk tolerance is high. We can pick up and move wherever.

you got some advice, anon?
