Your making money on the stock going down,

Say you short 100 PRAN stocks
you borrow 100 PRAN stocks that your broker has in his accounts / accounts of brokers your broker has an agreement with
you sell them on the spot
stock price goes down
you "buy to cover" basically you buy those stocks "back" and give them back to whoever you borrwed them from

Yep, that's how it works.
If you want to get just a tiny bit more advanced you'll use the limit command to buy (limiting the money you're willing to pay - accuracy and timing is part of the game - especially important with stocks that have large spreads - spread being the price gap between the ask and bid)

And you'll also set a stop command where you'll enter a price where if the stock goes you want out.

>Okay, I just shorted
You entered the command, you haven't shorted yet :)
>...ten grand worth of INTC and set the limit at $24.40
Tip: When (if) you actually trade using real money it's advisable to give the stock some range because it's possible that it won't find the amount of stocks you want for the specific price you entered so what you do is set the limit as $24.40-$24.39 ($24.40 being the trigger for the buying to short, $24.39 the lowest you're willing to sell - notice that the range goes lower when you short, and higher when you buy - 1 cent is usually enough, some high spread stocks though would require 2 or 3 cents though) or else its possible that you won't be able to grab that stock.

>does that mean I will buy those intel shares if/when the price per share hits $24,40?
Yes, mind you you'll be shorting them, not buying.

>What happens if it never goes that low?

>So say I put in $25-$24.50 on x amount of shares to short, when the price reaches twenty five dollars per share I auto buy the stock, and when it dips to $24.50 I auto buy to cover the stock?

No.
Limit is a single dimensional command, it only buys, sells or shorts - not a combination of any of those. What the limit command allows you to do is set a limit on the price you're willing to buy, sell or short a stock at as opposed to a "market" command that will just buy, sell or short a stock as fast as it can at whatever the asking price currently is. Entering a command like the one you just described would mean that as soon as the stock reached $25 your broker will be triggered into shorting stocks for you, the second number - $24.50) only means that the lowest price you're willing to short at is $24.50, so the price you buy the stock at will be somewhere between $25-24.50, nothing more.
