Most skills aren't that difficult to attain with the advent of the internet. You can literally contract someone 3000 miles away to advise you on a project, rather than work on it full time or be on-site.

Boomers who are regarded highly are already beginning to take on jobs all over the country for mundane tasks, mainly so it isn't screwed up while the wage slaves and poo in loos do the grunt work. This wasn't possible 10 years ago.

Most of them aren't gonna die for another 20 years, and will work until death because they have no retirement money. Why the fuck do I want to compete with them? I'd rather have property or a business I have full control and understanding over that these boomers don't understand but will probably use.

You guys must be working jobs that doesn't require a lot of thought into it. STEM field here and I negotiated every job I have held and was able to increase my salary a lot. Even when I get the annual raise I have broken their "maximum" raise percentage rule twice at two different companies. You need to be able to show them why your skills are needed. When you work for some one don't view it as "wagecuck", view it as a partnership. You're gaining experience while putting the skills you have learnt previously into this business. Essentially we're all consultants. You just have to be able to sell yourself. If you can't sell yourself, why would a company think you're not replaceable? Show them that you're worth it, voice it out and fight for it and you will get it. You need to make yourself indispensable.

I'll be honest - I am fucking glad that I'm paid by tariff and I don't have to negotiate anything. I'm only working part-time in a dream-job at university and have more than enough money, so much time for myself, and no stress whatsoever. I'm using both my time at work and at home to create a game that I would never be able to do if I had a 'normal' job. I'd fucking kill myself if I had to work 40 hours a week, negotiate salaries, worry about selling myself or anything of the sort. Freedom FAR outweighs any amount of money you get paid.

What you're describing as something people should aspire to do, I see as wasting your fucking life doing work you don't really want to do for thousands upon thousands of hours, so you can get to the part where you don't have to do that anymore. Instead I chose to do something that that gives me complete freedom and I'm sorry for everyone who works in a job he/she dislikes.

Turd world immigrants and their kids are plentiful and they'll work for peanuts because they're okay with living in a hovel. They'll never unionize or demand higher pay (shit even NPR did a story admitting that entry level employers favored hiring poo people because they have to deal with unions less). They don't have the high standard and eye for beauty that we do. Stop letting (((them))) import a slave class, we need to take a stand against this shit.

Btw feminism was a shill to lower the wages of workers too. If you trick women into working because "muh Independence" you double the labor force, thus cutting the cost of a worker in half. Import immigrants and wages lower even further to the point both parents now HAVE to work and they still can't afford to spend time actually raising their kids.

Okay, try spending all day in the car, wasting your gas, sweating in the sun going from job to job like a jerkoff handing in resumes to not get a single callback and see how you like it.

first thing you will realize when getting out is that they don't really teach you the shit you need in practice. Learning starts when you start actually working.
Protip: start contributing to open source projects while still in school

I used to look for jobs like that and I've gone no the and months without finding anything. I'm not trying to get into a dick measuring contest over this. I've done it both ways. Beating my feet and finding a job on the internet and I found the latter to be much easier. YMMV

My father used to say shit like that. Yep, a boomer. That shit stopped working in the 80's, and he refused to believe it.

These days, you negotiate while getting hired. If you want more, you go somewhere else. It's expected. Nobody sticks around one job for more than a year or two anymore, and nobody wants you to.

Get some valuable skills then you will have no trouble finding work. I learned how to code and now I can work literally anywhere I want because my skills are in demand pretty much everywhere.

That hasn't worked in probably 20 years. These days, you get in through referral, or an agency. Period. Nobody hires off the street above retail. They don't call anyone, because they have no intentions of hiring anyone off the street - most companies post public job ads because they have to, but they're going to hire a referral, from inside, or from an agency.
Submitting CVs blind is literally wasting your time.

Loyalty? Loyalty doesn't mean shit today. Workers aren't loyal, companies aren't loyal, it's dog eat fucking dog. If you can only negotiate 60k at your hiring, that's all you're worth. Period.

Nobody expects or wants someone around in ten years. They want churn to keep their costs down. You work a couple low paying jobs, and use those to get into the next level. Expect to change jobs every two years, max - and get a serious bump up every time. Expecting big raises over time is not rational in today's job market. You're worth what you get, in the door, and they have no expectations of paying you more unless they absolutely have to.

I know. I was just saying how I did it when I first started looking for work in 1998. The last time I went job hunting was in 2015 and my experience was as you describe. That's the beauty of being both young enough and old enough to have straddled both worlds. When the economy was good, the old school way was great. Show up and get hired. When the economy sucked, the in person thing sucked ass cuz you waste an enormous amount of time and gas money driving around. I've gone months like that in the early 2000s especially after 9/11. Compared to that, my experience of sending resumes over the net and just filling out bespoke applications on the employer website is a dream. But when there are no jobs to be found, everything sucks anyway.

Different developer anon here, >>7573953 is 100% correct. They do not teach you how to be a developer in college, they just teach you computer science. The kind of knowledge you have is extremely valuable from a career perspective and working as a senior dev, but you're not going to be hired on at a senior level. You're going to be hired on at a junior level. And junior level developers don't need to know dick about computer science, they just need to know how to code.

His advice is solid: start contributing to projects and learning about workflow and development processes. You need to be able to teach yourself anything you don't know, and you need to be able to work on a team. The era where developers were kept in a basement and they'd just slide pizzas under the door is over. Also be prepared to solve whiteboard problems in interviews. Especially once they see you have a CS degree: they will want to make sure you know your shit.
