Most people who talk about Pearl know that it aims to replace ads by using computational power from peoples who browse websites instead of showing ads. We also know that they aim to store this data on IOTA's tangle, so i decided to do some maths and found things become very problematic here as IOTA is not designed to store large files as if it is a cloud storage service.

Since most people are unfamiliar with IOTA in order to store data on the tangle you must make a transaction on the network (this can be a 0 value transaction) and in order to have it validated on the tangle you must also perform the proof of work to attach the transaction to the tangle.

The max amount of data you can store per transaction is 2187 trytes (IOTA is designed for ternary computing). According to this post: https://forum.iota.org/t/interesting-devs-conversation-on-bundles-transactions-hashing-of-pow-signature-in-iota/1399 this is roughly 1312 bytes. This means that data has to be split up into sizes less than 1312 bytes in size and put into a transaction with the proof of work performed to be put onto the tangle.

This is where the problems start to crop up, the IOTA foundation have set themselves a goal to reach 100-1000 confirmed transactions per second (CTPS) on the IOTA network this year, this is a lot of CTPS.

Lets assume they reach 1000 CTPS and that all of those 1000 CTPS are to be utilized by the PRL network, this means that theoretically PRL can only store 1.3 megabytes per second worth of data on the tangle, this is tiny considering what PRL aims to achieve. To make matters worse, in order to achieve this upload speed, you will have to be performing proof of work for 1000 iota transactions per second, which requires A LOT of computational power (especially when you consider non enthusiast PC's are so slow) for just a small 1.3 mbps upload speed.

Then consider the IOTA network development might take longer than expected and 1000 CTPS might not even be realistic for a large part of 2018. Regardless of speed, you still have to do a ridiculous boat load of PoW to store it on the tangle even if the IOTA network is speedy enough to handle PRLs large storage needs.

TL;DR: IOTA's tangle isn't made to be used as a free cloud storage system and requires way too much PoW to be useful as a data storage layer for PRL.
