The link token is just a token. The nodes will communicate api data in real time. The tokens are just for signing smart contracts. This isn't something like a tracking number that you have to wait for a server update tick to see new information.

For example, say you run an iot service for insurance companies. Your chainlink nodes can query data from your device's api data and relay them back to you without using the ethereum network. Think of it as a sidechain running a real time ledger, the tokens are just for node holders to put a bit of skin in the game to discourage them from submitting bad data. It's why the hardware requirements for a node is so high and you can't use a raspberry pi for a node like other blockchains.
