Estimate what your compooper's hashrate is for various coin types and use calculators to determine possible profit. But yes, you can definitely make some non-negative money.

After briefly investigating monero, it looks like mining it on a nice system might yield $15 per month.

(In my case that computation would amount in at least $45 of additional electricity per month)
