58341009 No.58341009 [Reply] [Original]

Welcome to the Monero General, dedicated to the discussion of the world's leading decentralized P2P privacy cryptocurrency!

Monero is secure, low-fee, and fungible, meaning users can send XMR around the globe despite corrupt governments or broken financial systems. Innovative privacy features such as Ring Signatures, Stealth Addresses, and Ring CT ensure that Monero's blockchain is obfuscated -- In other words, the financial history of all Monero users is encrypted from the prying eyes of adversaries on a public blockchain, with transactions being visible only by a user willingly providing a view key.

Monero has also improved upon the scaling downsides of current popular cryptocurrencies. To avoid high fees, dynamic block size ensures that the size of the blocks will increase as the amount of transactions increases. Further, the mining network algorithm RandomX establishes that anybody with a CPU can participate in mining, preventing the ASIC miner domination that creates a high barrier to entry. Lastly, the mining network will be preserved by Tail Emission -- instead of the block reward falling to zero like with Bitcoin, the block reward gradually approached 0.6 XMR in June 2022, where it will forever stay. This constant linear inflation means the inflation rate will asymptotically go to zero while continuing to provide an incentive to miners to maintain the network.

If you still have questions, feel free to ask and a MoneroChad will be with you shortly.

We did have some chainlink monero rank wars next to each other 2 years ago and it made some good shitposting. Imagine if we flipped chainlink while chainlink actually stayed and kept going down in the future? Flipping XRP would be biblical in XSG shitposting.

I don't see a world where people would wildly use CryptoCurrencys maybe only in 500 years in the future if a shit load of countries start defaulting on their fiat currencies

Ewww, that reeks of desperation and coattail riding/affinity scamming. BTC isn't successful, its just famous....for now.

To XMR bagholders,
While Monero does offer undisputed superior privacy protections than Bitcoin, XMR's hashrate has been declining for the last >2 years. In contrast, Bitcoin's hashrate has been steadily increasing over the same period.
Additionally, other cryptocurrencies are starting to incorporate privacy features that may be "good enough" for the average user. For example, Litecoin has added privacy-enhancing features, and Ethereum is exploring the integration of zero-knowledge proofs to improve privacy. This means Monero's privacy advantage may become less of a differentiator over time.
Sincerely, James Matsumoto

But at least trusting a third party while you build economic momentum between incompetent despots sees an avenue to success. You're not going to use BTC in one of these developing economies, short of a reserve currency against something else.

block size to keep the network 'equitable' for third worlders is a nonstarter. It does nothing but price them out of the networks. They need the infrastructure to compete, and it isn't there. They DO need the mediator for exchange however, and right now they are priced out of it.

> Miners can update their unspent transaction output sets without witnessing previous owners' signatures for SegWit coins.
> Previous owners' signatures have less value to miners for SegWit coins since miners don't require them to claim fees.
> There is no stable Nash equilibrium where all miners enforce SegWit, unlike with Bitcoin where there is an equilibrium where all miners enforce Bitcoin's consensus rules.
> SegWit coins have a weaker security model than bitcoins and are susceptible to attacks that wouldn't work as well on Bitcoin.

Also is it worth it to buy some extra before the shutdown? Don’t know how easy it will be to use it in a few years with governments cracking down on its use. I don’t buy drugs or do anything that really needs privacy, but it may not be a bad idea to have some just in case if SHTF. Thoughts?

The issue is that your strategy, like metal fags who nonchalantly buy dips, are being bled dry with the passage of time. You'll accumulate and have 1000 XMR but by then the price of bread will be $30 a loaf. Time makes your bags heavier.

Dynamic block size seems to work, got devs to fix the fee calculation bug on the main wallet too. Churning makes it likely irrelevant. https://github.com/Rucknium/misc-research/blob/main/Monero-Black-Marble-Flood/pdf/monero-black-marble-flood.pdf says that effective ring size is 5.5 during the last attack. Also Rucknium proposed this: https://ccs.getmonero.org/proposals/Rucknium-Statistical-Research.html requesting funding (204 XMR) for statistical research work to analyze Monero's privacy and transaction data over 13 weeks.

10th of April summary of #monero-research-lab:

> Generalized Bulletproofs Security Proofs CCS proposal was discussed and there was consensus to merge it.
> New elliptic curves were proposed for use in FCMP.
> Research was discussed on pre-Seraphis full-chain membership proofs and wallet tiers that could be enabled by FCMP.
> Concerns were raised about adding too much scope to research projects before existing work like Seraphis and multisig is completed.
> It was noted that adding optional features like OVK to wallets after FCMP would not require a hard fork.
> There was discussion of the need to get multisig out of experimental status.
> FCMP protocol was discussed in relation to supporting multisig.

11th of April summary:

> Discussions around optional view keys for view-only wallets and how regulators may try to force users to provide view keys.
> Mentions of Monero Policy channel being a better place to discuss regulation topics.
> Announcements that Generalized Bulletproofs Security Proofs CCS proposal and Rucknium Statistical Research CCS proposal are now fully funded.

Monero's hashrate has to incrrase. To this end, I think, machines like bitmain x5 are useful. They package the required, competitive hardware in a plug and play mechanism---no need to manually setup a new mobo, etc, and then manually setup xmrig.

I know bitmain are the "bad guys", but what I am saying can be done by another company, and it would still benefit increasing the monero hashrate in an economically profitable way

I believe the notion of " monero mining shouldn't be profitable" is hurting its hashrate proliferation. The volunteering CPUs will only show up when the network is in a dire situation and the volumteering hahsrate won't be a long-term, sticky one---as this requires an ongoing profit motive.

This probably got asked a million times, but let's say I want to cash out 6 figures of Monero and I really don't want people paid by tax dollars sticking their nose in that. What is the best country to use Monero or cash it out to bank accounts/cash?

I know localmonero, but that's probably not enough, right? If I'm in some EU country, the banks will probably lock the funds instantly or at the very least, the transaction will end up in the suspicious activity reports?

So what's the endgame?
>endgame is not needing to cash out

Assuming you use a bank account, yes. Assuming you do physical exchange/cash by mail/gift cards and move 500-1k per transaction for safety, no. Because then banks don't see it. If you need cash, you can always open a business with a lot of small cash transactions like a vending machine business.
Best bet for moving large amounts is having a bank account at the private banks for richfags only. Those don't give a shit about anything, in any country. You will need to have 20 mill+ tho.

That's a good name. XMR, Tor, I2p + torrenting, SimpleX/Signal stuff can be discussed in there.

How do I actually mine Monero?
I know how to install and run the software, but I don't know where to start with setting up a PC to mine it.
Is there a good guide anywhere?
I have a bunch of old PCs and free electricity, how do I set them up to just mine Monero forever? What OS should I use? How can I make them boot into the mining software automatically if the power goes out?

start with stupid choices like windows, manually set up mining that won't autorestart, some mining bundle like gupax. don't let perfect be the enemy of good enough, get everything set up with just what you know and spend time later learning to improve it if it's worth your mental bandwidth.

So how do you disambiguate addresses uniquely? <username>@<hash>? What do you do for initializing the DHT? P2P truly private email that can work with standard tools would be incredible.

this is the issue with adoption imho

was thinking of SIA instead of fucking IPFS
the XMR community was big on this
I'll have some bootstrap light nodes to initialize the first set of p2p connections

Mine is running as a SystemD service so to pass it commands I do:

With the service file having:

Sockets=monerod.socket
StandardInput=socket
StandardOutput=journal
StandardError=journal
To read the output:
journalctl -f -u monerod.service

I was thinking about this. My idea is to keep it simple and piggy back on hidden services of I2P or Tor. That takes care of both identity and security. Imagine a basic email server but adapted to be a plugin for the I2P client.
faggot@lskgslkjfghpfdghisjnfan3qdfgsjg.b32.i2p
The only limitation would be that both sides need their I2P running to exchange messages. Given that I2P is supposed to run in the background anyway, this isn't that big of a deal to me as long as there are good retry interval settings and stuff. Yes, it's a limitation, but an obvious one that simplifies many other things. For adoption, this coming standard with I2P just like the torrent client is critical, otherwise no one will use it (Ricochet and I2PChat already exist). I2P already comes with a torrent client to share files and a web server to host your own website. A mail plugin like this being included would complete the suite very nicely. You will be able to make a guy install I2P and voila! You have decentralized anonymous messaging and file sharing out of the box! Pretty sweet, right?

Then there is SimpleX. It's has the best architecture for IM I know. It has something like Monero's sub-addresses in that different contacts can't correlate you because of the same ID. That makes it superior to Session. SimpleX is not entirely private by itself, you connect to relay server which can be self hosted that store and forward messages, but it supports Tor relays out of the box already.

In context of 4chan, they're only allowing specific domains with non-anonymous checks to register because they want to prevent spam. So this decentralized mail discussion we're having is completely unrelated to that. Ironically, I think a (maybe cheaper) Pass paid with Monero over Tor would be the best way to prevent spamshilling in completely anonymous way. No mail needed of any kind for that.
