> Be me
> Go to welding school because it sounds fun and everyone I'm around says it pays well
> Graduate top of my class because its kind of fun and I seem to have a natural talent for it
> Get my first job
> $15 an hour.........
> Get laid off almost immediately due to being unable to work full time hours (Uni classes)
> Get another job a few months later when my classes are more flexible
> 6am to 4:30 pm for $17 an hour.............
> Leave when my uni schedule becomes less flexible
> Take a break from uni, get a new job, $19 an hour, 2:30-2am...
> Spend about a year there and leave due to the extreme hours and rather poor ventilation
> Do some research
> For every 2 welders which leave the industry, 1 welder joins, meaning we should be in the middle of a massive welding shortage
> Welding wages have seemingly become stagnant (Average welder makes between $35-40k, almost poverty in todays day and age)
> The only way to make good money in welding is by having your own company, which I am working on getting out of the water
> My brother makes $17 an hour doing light unskilled manual labor for the government.....

Why does working hard never seem to pay off? It seems like its almost impossible to make over $20 an hour welding, why would I subject myself to all kinds of carcinogens and hazards for less than $3 more than what a government worker makes.

You answered your own question galaxy brain. Right now we're in a weird spot in history where skill and talent is desperately needed, but also grossly underpaid. Despite this, everyone keeps trying to move into generalist jobs like engineer, programmer, welder, tailor etc. leading to people complaining "I spent a gorillion dollars on a degree from harvard and I only start at 70k how did this happen!". Meanwhile wagelet-tier jobs like amazon driver are paying 23/hr despite sucking dicks, because getting non-80 IQ pajeets to do them is difficult and pajeets get fired regularly for obvious reasons.

The actual advice is muh less buckbroken path. If everyone is saying "do this thing, in 5 years I made 100k easy!" they are liars, once society as a whole is aware a thing exists I start getting ants in my pants.

I have a company that I'm working on getting off the ground however either I live in an area where welding services are not needed (which is false, as I know how much welding work is around here and its in demand) or people would rather pay for new products than repairs.

The primary reason why I went to welding school is because I planned on going to school for engineering. I started my degree but I dont know if I'll end up finishing it. All of the engineers I knew recommended that I get welding certs first because that will help me with design down the road.

looking into underwater welding at a shipyard. These dudes make astronomical money where I'm at (I work in NE with DoE) and everyone treats them pretty well. You also can get advanced diving certs pretty easily if you're interested in that, almost any master diver will accept even inspections as a qualified wreck dive out here

>> No.58143709

The nice thing about being a welder is you can find new work quickly. I've quit one job and found another in the same day before. This isn't unexpected either and you can be a lot more aggresive asking for raises because of it.
>my brother makes 17 an hour doing light unskilled labor for the government
And he'll be stuck at that same wage relatively, forever. At least unless he worms his way into another govjob position.
You are right though, straight up just working hard doesn't pay. You either gotta be looking up and acquiring skills to become more valuable or looking around for better positions. I plan on getting out of welding eventually but it sure as fuck beats being stuck in retail.

They also have a higher than average death rate (welders live about 10 years less than the average lifespan in the US) and they are legally only allowed to work 6 months out of the year due to the extreme physical stress that it puts on their body. I have no interest at dying at 65 from a heart aneurism.

I know they make bank, however based on everything I have heard its very much not worth the risk unless you know exactly what you're getting into.

I could see that helping fill out your general knowledge base, but they did you a disservice because economically speaking delaying your entry to the market hurts you way more than knowing what a fillet weld is could ever help.
I did Mechanical, which is good for being general a broad, but also weakly remuneration for the same reason. If I had to do it over I would get a 2 year in automation and controls, specifically try to get into a company who does municipal work.
Backlogs are large, pay is good, and the work won't be falling off anytime soon. I know that skilled automation programming engineers are in short supply and command a premium.

Being an engineer making 70k a year in an air conditioned office is better than being a welder in a carcinogenic factory.

And if you stick with it for 10 years you can make 150k, which will basically be 70k now with how inflation is going.

Good work, anon. You should be proud of that. So what it sounds like is you're in your early 20s still. Which means you have time to figure this out, so don't stress out. Welding isn't a good long term career plan. It's nice to have because you'll never go hungry or homeless, but we are here to aim higher than that.

it's an absolute scam, but not if you know how to play the game. grow a bit of an ego, know your skill level and worth, be a little bullheaded, remember you're usually dealing with tradies and boomers, and that most blue collar small businesses are stuck in the past generation and don't keep up to modern standards of industry

I started doing arboriculture in a major HCOL city, got a job with no exp, everything was on the job training, started 18/hr +benefits, 2 years later 24/hr +benefits, and esop, super professional company. while i was there a couple guys left and started their own companies, now have half a dozen new trucks, see them on occasion, some other guys left and now do contract work with other companies who need a good climber and set their own rates, hitting 100-120/hr but they have to have all their own gear and insurance, but they set their own hours, standards, and everything, get a couple people who you subcontract for or build a rep doing specialty stuff either too small or weir for job-shops and go from there. you need to build your own brand, and sell yourself. take pictures of what you do and brag about your shit in ways that make people think you're the shit. you did graduate top of your class and now have a couple years experience. remember everything is negotiable, and if you don't ask, there's no chance. don't take the companies you're applying to at their word, play the game, see how much you can make them bend and give you what YOU want.

Right now I'm working part time in a different trade, however I already have transportation, 2 welders (A self shielded flux core and a stick welder), plenty of hand tools, an air compressor, insurance the whole 9 yards. On top of all of that one of my relatives is going to be leaving the industry and said he'd give me his nicer flux core welder (I believe it is a Fronius, my current welders are a Titanium FCAW and Miller SMAW). I have my own domain and email as well as business cards, but have been having a hell of a time finding work. I was trying to get a rather large contract with a construction company however they have been slow as fuck (it has already been a month since I reached out and we were supposed to begin prototyping on a project this week but all communications went silent after the owner told me to contact him, which I did).

Tomorrow I plan on calling up all of the landscaping/construction/remodeling companies that I can find to see if they need welding help because I have absolutely no way of getting my services out there. I have probably given away close to 200 flyers and 100 business cards so far and I have yet to get any call backs, granted that could also be my fault for handing them out in residential areas. My only real limitation is that I dont have a generator, however I will be able to purchase one (Looking at a Predator 8750 Inverter) as soon as I need a mobile power source.

the start is always the hardest but once you start to figure things out i think you'll be in a good position. might be worth targeting other businesses, think autobody shops, heavy equipment outfits, small machine shops, etc. If you can stack some other utility onto welding that's even better, but that's probably for later down the road. you've probably already thought of all this so I'm saying it just in case. good luck dude

First off you're a retard if $20/hr in America is the best you can do as an experienced skilled-tradesman in an industrial setting. Secondly what was even the goal of fucking uni then??

I actually don't think you're a retard, but you are not aiming in an appropriate direction to achieve your maximum individual potential.

I plan on getting a Miller Trailblazer 330 as soon as possible. I plan on simply getting an inverter generator and hooking up my welders to that at the moment however. The generator im looking to get can output 7000 watts with a 240v outlet. The reason why a lot of engineers dont make good money is because they are lazy fucks who spend all day signing off other peoples paperwork. You can easily make north of $150k if you're actually willing to do real work and not be a lazy office bum. The other thing is that while I am good at welding I do not particularly enjoy doing it as a job. I'd rather work above the neck if possible. I also want to get into R&D and not get stuck in fabrication.

Also, considering that I'm not even 21 yet, $20 is about the best I'm going to get, maybe $25 if I were to REALLY push them. Most of the people I knew who were making more than $25 an hour had decades of experience. One of my former supervisors only just broke $50k with over 3 decades of experience.

If you can start a company, you might have a massive competitive advantage. You could offer higher pay to any welders you do take on once you have a steady stream of recurring jobs. Clearly some piece of shit fatcat is siphoning off way too much excess value from the welders in your area, imagine if you could offer all of them the same amount of work and a 25% pay increase.
