My dad caught on to this to some degree and would gift me Mont Blanc pens and accessories at milestones of my life.
I grew up in the 80s/90s when you'd see those father/son patek ads in the flight magazines

I've also always had issues with impulse control so I obsessed with the idea of getting a patek collection for the last few years.
I'm slowly trying to deprogram myself now. I'm doing well, but f I have extra money, I try to use it in ways that buy me time with my family.
I took a month off in japan last September and climbed Mt Fuji with my boys. Took a nice 2 week ski vacation with them in Switzerland in February.
My dad gave me his old GMT a few months back. My sons will get a rolly each when they turn 18. My dad's and mine.
I hope they don't put too much stock into this sort of thing. Don't get me wrong, *being rich* is definitely worthwhile but you can still afford many of the trappings of wealth and still need to work for a living.
I still like the idea of an aquanaut I guess but I would have to have so much money that I wouldn't even give it a second thought.
And I would only ever buy from an AD. The secondary market is a circus that robs the luxury watch industry of what little glamor it has left.
