I actually couldn't care less because from a game theory perspective retail literally locks the float or the shorts capitulate. Those are the two outcomes that basically mean we win no matter what so long as we hold.
As explained before, the shorts are simply hedging their short exposure down to zero using total return swaps. This allows them the TEMPORARY arrangement to profit on their shorts. This is important because shorts only profit otherwise by repurchasing their shares. They can skip this step with derivatives. The next problem is, well, how do we win if they are hedged? Well the hedge only applies to the outstanding short position. They have no capacity to stop you from purchasing more shares. By definition for shorts to be profitable then they need the price to be lower. But all that does is misprice the stock and make it cheaper than it should be on a fundamental basis. So the more we buy the harder and harder it gets to hedge it all away over and over again. Every share you buy is another chunk of capital they have to set aside for margin.Once the total return swaps close they're fucked. Also, the counterparty is almost certainly the Fed.
