chainlink functions uses an encrypted database to hold fragments of user keys so that nodes can use those keys in jobs without ever knowing the full keys. but chainlink has always been very tight-lipped about how this works or how it's supposed to be secure (the code is not public)

from what i've read is that the keys are abstracted and impossible for one body to know. they'll use a zero proof system to reference your ssn/dob/license/bank account/etc in case of a needed recovery. they're trying to solve custody concerns but doing so while keeping it completely private.
