Curious on what the black market of commodities looks like? Obviously there's "illegal" commodities trade and operations all over the world but is it one of those things that dwarfs the actual surface market?

Someone I personally know and trust who was in the Uranium industry told me that often times due to over regulation and whatever the political flavor of the week towards Nuclear was at the time, it was cheaper for them to buy black market Uranium from Canada and sometimes even Russia.

there are loads of mines out there across the province, but only 3 are currently permitted to do tole milling right now. Tole milling means your changing the composition of your waste a lot, and that means you need to have a wider array of testing for your waste, its a pain to get those extra permits.
New Afton can tole mill but their minimum shipment is 1000+ TPR, the Merrit mill run by Nicola is far smaller but designed to do limited batch runs of material, so its perfect for operations such as Dome Mountain. The third is a mill down by Greenwood BC owned by Zimen Mining, but their not operating it at this time. Right now no ones got a mill close to smithers for small scale production, but there are a number of mothballed operations which could do it, with a bit of work.

This is fairly typical of gold miners. I have only been watching them since 2018 or so but this always happens. Gold miners are a leveraged play on gold, so if gold backs off a bit, the miners drop like tanks. The mining stocks are hard to evaluate because they are mostly really shitty backyard companies with poo poo pee pee balance sheets and tons of debt. There aren't a whole lot of people really evaluating them beyond whatever happens with gold, and they are really susceptible to external economic factors. The ones that are public are even worse than the private ones, there are a few private ones with no debt that I'd love to invest into but they stayed private for precisely that reason. No good company is going to go public these days and deal with all that bullshit if they don't need it.

Lets talk community solar energy production. (Under 1MW of production)

I contract out in the utility scale solar industry quite often (construction management). I get to see a lot of renewable energy projects at the utility scale (1MW+ capacity) quite often. These are multi-million dollar projects.

A glaring gap I see in the market is community level solar farms (ie. >1MW) which is something I think could benefit the residents and economies small town's who have no large industry. My opinion on this comes from growing up in a small town and now once again living in a small town. Generally, higher income earners in those areas often commute at least 20-30mins minimum to work, stores and recreation because it is typically better quality, affords a higher wage, or is cheaper.

I feel as though those small town residents rarely see opportunity to cut costs/ earn more back home due to how small and stagnant their economies are. Community solar to me seems like one solution to that?

You the investor profits from the PPA with the local power company or co-op. The power company gains cheaper energy and an albeit small but stable backup/peak power option. Residents see a decrease in their electric costs, in turn increasing their spending power, which can/will be recycled in the community out of sheer convenience. I watched something similar happen in my home town, however not with solar. The town dramatically improved, some investors moved in, and more local business thrived.

Anyone here work in the solar industry full time and have better insight on this? Help me poke holes in my theory. One issue I see is the PPA rates negotiated between the provider and the power company. On large scale this rate is fairly low and metered by the MWH, however utility scale projects produce so much power that the profit margin is pretty fat. A solution I see to this problem comes in the negotiation with the power provider. Higher PPA rate/KWH for the advantage of having the option?

>> No.57355556

>>57355356
The main obstacle is that solar is horrendously inefficient. Otherwise it would be pretty cool to have something along those lines

>> No.57355736

>>57355556
Inefficient yes, comparative to other power production means but there's great tax incentives for individuals and businesses and inefficient or not, if the numbers work, they work. You also don't have the burden of being the power company, just a supplementary means of power. Prices in multiple industries account for inefficiency in manufacturing. That's just the cost of doing business.

Major overhead capital would include land, price of hardware, price of install and maintenance. Land that isn't prized for farming or residential development is fairly discounted in those areas. Hardware is an fixed expense which can be reduced through tax incentives. Price of install can be negotiated. Maintenance information is both provided by parts manufactures and can easily be subbed out if margins allow, manufacturer maintenance intervals make this easy to plan for.

Just goes to show how you can’t discount random acts of god messing with an investment thesis. At least last quarter they had 44% more production than in that same time in 2022, so assuming the material is somewhat consistent they should have a massive year. It looks like it’s being priced in the past month or so, but it might be worth setting a $2 limit order it if we get battered even further.

that depends on what the weathers like on surface, you see more pack rats underground than bugs in northern Canada. One odd situation we ran into years ago working UG was a mosquito infestation that was setting up shop in our deeper sumps. The sumps were fed by ground water infiltration, so didnt see much disturbance. Suddenly, one week in mid summer we had swarms of mosquitos everywhere!

I've worked in both limestone and coal mines doing maintenance work. I never saw any bug in a limestone mine. The environment down there is inhospitable to any life at all. Dry limestone dust (called "minus") everywhere, inches deep. Any bug that makes it down there would dry up and die very quickly in that stuff.
In coal mines they use timbers for posting and cribbing (types of roof support). Sometimes the bundles of timber have bugs crawling on them, because they're fresh from the surface and the coal muck on the floor of the mine won't dry out a bug really quickly and kill it.
So I've seen spiders and centipedes on bunches of timbers that we had to handle for posting and cribbing. But you're so covered in gear (gloves and sometimes long sleeves, depending on the weather and the mine company's rules) and have to get the job done, so you just ignore them. (At CONSOL mines, you have to wear long sleeves all the time, but most coal mines allow t-shirts in hot weather. Yes, coal mines can get very hot and humid since so much air is blown into the mine from the surface in order to blow out gases like methane.)
So, I guess the bugs you find depend on the mine. In a limestone mine: none. In a coal mine: some. Some coal mines even have rat infestations where the miners tend to eat and discard old food, though I haven't seen that before, just heard stories. The rats come in on mantrips in slope mines or through the shaft with the miners in shaft mines.
Also, limestone mines tend to remain around 50-60 degrees Fahrenheit all year round, so they're pretty comfy. While coal mines, as I've mentioned, can be sweltering hot or even butt ass cold depending on the surface temps, again, due to the huge amount of air flow in coal mines that's needed to get dangerous gases out of the mine.

I haven't shaved in weeks, brother, so yeah, I have a pretty thick beard going on, though usually I like to be clean shaven.

And I do drink the occasional ale.

>> No.57368123

>>57367825
Oh also, as to bugs in a mine, I have seen earwigs and beetles on the timbers. Just any outdoor bug that would be in wood gets in those things because they're often recently cut for the mines. There are whole industries near large coal mines supplying roof timbers.

Just as a bump, I once got banned from /pol/ for making a thread about how $100k is the minimum needed to live a solidly middle class life now in the U.S. Now, many agree with that position.
Even in rural West Virginia $40k doesn't go far because many trailer parks have been bought up by monopolizers who raise the lot rent (and evict those who can't afford it) and because food and health care costs are so high.

>> No.57369160

>>57369152
And by "solidly middle class," I mean own a house, have one spouse working and the other raising two to three kids, have money for savings, have money to eat out occasionally, own two cars, and go on a domestic vacation once a year (or an international vacation once every few years).
That's solid middle class. $100k per year is barely enough for that anymore -- maybe in West Virginia. But most jobs there, outside of coal and gas, pay terribly if you can even find one.

To be fair, you have to have a very high IQ to understand Bayhorse Silver. The technical reports are extremely subtle, and without a solid grasp of geology most of the assays will go over a typical investor's head. There's also Graeme's optimistic outlook, which is deftly woven into his characterisation - his personal business draws heavily from historical records, for instance. The holders understand this stuff; they have the intellectual capacity to truly appreciate the depths of this mine, to realize that they're not just bonanza grade- they say something deep about the economic system. As a consequence people who dislike Bayhorse Silver truly ARE idiots- of course they wouldn't appreciate, for instance, the humour in Graeme's existencial catchphrase "2 more weeks," which itself is a cryptic reference to when Graeme's mansion will be built. I'm smirking right now just imagining one of those addlepated simpletons scratching their heads in confusion as Bayhorse's three PhD geologist genius unfolds itself on /biz/. What fools... how I pity them. And yes by the way, I DO have a Bayhorse Silver tattoo. And no, you cannot see it. It's for the ladies' eyes only- And even they have to demonstrate that they're within 5 IQ points of my own (preferably lower) beforehand.

Alpha Metallurgical Resources, which is a pure play met coal producer with mines in southern West Virginia and western Virginia, had recently passed $400 per share. A year and a half ago it was like $150 per share and many didn't believe it would rise anymore.
At the rate it's going, I would not at all be surprised if Alpha hits $500 per share this year, or even in the next few months.
It's not a moonshot that will make you rich off of a $1000 investment any longer; the time for that was during the 2020 crash when the stock sat at $3 per share. I bought a little over 2000 shares then and just kind of lucked out.
I figured I had seen this game before. The stock market crashes due to some funny business, then helicopter money gets dropped all over and the people who scooped during the crash make big returns. So I figured steelmaking coal is a good bet, what with all the talk of rebuilding America's infrastructure and some of its industrial capacity, and I got lucky.
But Alpha might still be a good buy for folks looking for an easy 10-20% gain within a year's time at the longest.
Coal, I think, is ready for takeoff, since even the climate "scientists" are bashing natural gas now as worse than coal due to methane leaks everywhere -- methane, supposedly, being a far more potent greenhouse gas than carbon dioxide.
Plus, coal is abundant, easy to use and store, and offers remarkable price stability; meanwhile natty gas swings up and down like a yoyo several hundred percentage points in some weeks.
Our electricity in the U.S. was far cheaper, more reliable, and more price stable month over month back when coal was at its height, making up some 50% of fuel used to generate electricity. As soon as fracking came along and coal-fired plants began to be shuttered in favor of gas-fired plants, electric utility prices began to rise and become unstable.
People have noticed this by now. So I wouldn't be surprised to see coal make a comeback.

Does someone want to look at Trigg Minerals for me and see what they think?
Seems like they have some assets with high potential and are holding relatively low debt.
Valuation at $AUD3.3 million.

New directors have come on the last few months and have reportedly started more exploration of their assets.

In 2022 they won an award from Australian Mining Prospect Awards for their discovery of a potash resource (whatever that's worth). They posted an announcement in November 2023 that tests will begin on the site in Q1 '24, seemingly after the change of directors was finalised.

Today, they've posted a announcement -"Multiple Epithermal Gold Targets" at a new project they acquired in November '23. They've concluded this from historical data analysis but test drilling is said to commence in late Q1/early Q2 this year.

Is this a good speculative investment or am I basically throwing my money down the drain?
Thanks.

What would happen if the biggest producers would need to become buyers in the open market while they have contracts locked at a substantially lower price? would their upside be lowered? or would uranium price spike to 200 usd/lbs and make everyone retarded so they just buy the stocks regardless? Thanks. Yes, he's keeping the world running. Steel HRC finished today at 1070, about level, but I think scrap has fallen enough that we'll see downward pricing continue. Scrap to metal spread was nice today for the mini mill steel producers (56%), maybe why the stocks had a bit of an up date, but I'd like to see scrap prices start to reverse before I put money in. Iron ore is down also.

Steel Dynamics earnings are tomorrow.

Are the fundamentals good or does it at least have realistic potential? Nothing much else you can draw conclusions about.
At the moment it's really hard to say which company is really even good or bad, because all of them have gotten so fucked that there's no difference in pricing regarding fundamentals.
Garbage and good players are both on the same level and both will likely explode upwards when the commodity sector finally stops sucking balls.
It'll be like with the Uranium plays from their lows.
Everything will pull multiples at first and only later on we'll finally see which companies were dogshit to hold.
If your average is low enough I doubt it makes much difference at this point what commodity play you hold, you'll win big initially anyways when things turn.
Unless of course you hold something that has the potential to go bankrupt, there's always that question when things look bad for too long.

Probably the best thing I've read about the steel market so far is the STLD (Steel Dynamics) 2022 annual report (2023 should be out shortly). It gives a really good overview of the business and what factors influence steel pricing, especially starting on page 27 of the PDF and onward. Scrap, iron ore, electricity, freight, Chinese market, and so on are all covered in it and it's a pretty approachable read.

Alpha Metallurgical Resources is really crashing this week. I'm selling most of my shares to collect the cash, and will be converting much of that cash into gold and silver.
With the constitutional crisis brewing over Texas, and 25 Republican governors siding with Texas (rightly so!), the U.S. could become quite unstable.
The main thing maintaining the dollar's value is its reserve currency status and people's trust in its strength. We don't have gold or a highly industrial economy backing our currency. With a big constitutional crisis or contested election this year, trust in the dollar could drop rather severely causing it to lose a lot of value.

Randomly stumbled across a familiar name, Alex Klenmann as I was going through different companies.
I remember him as the CEO of the Uranium play Azincourt Energy, and those guys kept their zero hit drill results to themselves as long as possible, while constantly promising people they totally have hit a radioactive zone and there might be something there.
Apparently he gets around quite a bit.
Here are all of the positions he currently holds, a busy man by the looks of it:

>Mr. Klenman holds the position of Chief Executive Officer, Secretary & Director at Tisdale Clean Energy Corp.
>President, Chief Executive Officer & Director at Manning Ventures, Inc.,
>President, CEO, Secretary & Director at Azincourt Energy Corp.,
>Chief Executive Officer, CFO & Executive Director at Cross River Ventures Corp.,
>President, Chief Executive Officer & Director at Leocor Gold, Inc.,
>President, Secretary & Director at Nexus Gold Corp.,
>President, Chief Executive Officer & Director at Nexus Metals Corp. (a subsidiary of Nexus Gold Corp.) and
>Director & Director-Corporate Development at Arbor Metals Corp.
>He is also on the board of Ord Mountain Resources Corp., Blackhawk Energy Corp.
>Atco Mining, Inc. (former Chief Executive Officer & Non-Independent Director) and Oberon Uranium Corp.

This guy basically just gets into a shitton of companies, probably started by himself or his friends and gets people to throw money at them and then lets the companies fade away.
He isn't even trying to hide his scams, but then again I guess there's no need for subtlety in this clown world market.

there was a report out recently that i ll try and find that put 1/5th of all minerals produced were still gray and black market sourced, and even in North America 1/3rd of all mineral production was difficult to fully trace back to a single source. I ll try and find that report in the morning, it had some really interesting statistics around who and where minerals were coming from.

Are you joking?
You really believe the "american industrial sector is a behemoth"?
And you also believe the U.S. is very stable and not divided into factions that are out for each other's blood?
The U.S. could very well lose its reserve currency status if there is a civil war or breakup of the country.
No, there is no other reserve currency at the moment to take its place, but why does there have to be? There is no law of nature saying that the globe must have one reserve currency. For most of history, there world was multipolar and had numerous major currencies to choose from for trade.

I'm curious what country you're from.
I have noticed a lot of consternation among Western allies about the decline of the U.S. and think it stems from a fear that if the U.S. loses its global hegemony, their generally cozy lifestyles will end.
U.S. military power props up the European welfare states. They can afford such lavish subsidies for their people because they haven't had to pay much for soldiers and weapons since World War II. If U.S. hegemony fails, a lot of social benefits will have to slashed so that these Western Allies can afford a sizable number of soldiers and weapons for the first time in almost a century.
I don't want to assume you're one of these types, but am curious where you're from.

Also news stories about how the US can't even produce weapons fast enough to supply Ukraine.
I don't agree with NATO supporting Ukraine, but this conflict has exposed the pathetic industrial capacity of the US even in military-related production.
People today mostly want service jobs, influencer roles etc. We don't even have a manufacturing-capable population any longer.

Ukraine is a largely fake war to fleece Americans and most arms are ending up being sold internationally. Wagging the dog.
Modern wars are population control and mass theft/fraud

There's more to Trillion
> EU natgas prices crashed due to warm winter
> Trillion missed production guidance by 25%
> They fucked up their wells, gas flow is dropping faster than expected and they require a fortune to fix them

What was the issue with their wells?
Lassen here. I've been following the west Texas o&g in the fracking scene so I know knowing of trillions actual well operations.
Please give me anything to DD. I'm home now and /comfy so I can dig my heels into trillion of needed.
I'm gonna go reread my old DD in the archives this weekend because I had a head injury and am now without a fuck ton of memories.

Recover soon Lassenbro! I'm not an expert in oil/gas, but from what I could gather:

So their original estimate was to produce 48 Mcf/d at 60$ gas price (half goes to the company half to Turkey). Last quarter they had 10 Mcf/d around 30$.
They based their production estimates on the initial well pressure test. However they were greedy fucks and overestimated porosity. They made the wells too wide and too deep until the water pressure suffocated the wells and they can only run them a few hours a day. They're installing artificial lifts to increase production and heavily cut back on growth. The problem is that this takes time and they are fucking broke with the crashed natgas prices, debt and management salaries. They're in a cash crunch: they recently made a PP and there's speculation that they need another one, their SP dropped 90% and are priced for bankruptcy. It's still a multibagger if they make it, but don't bet the house on it.

Oh fuck if their books are trashy then no amount of well development is gonna save them. That's the sob story of o&g and I've heard it all. Niggers took mega bonuses and hire a fucking stadia full of deadbeats to make their jobs easier while the cotton is tall and dont plan for when times will be lean. Eventually get upside down and start layoffs and corner cutting only to go belly up because they did too little too late. I found the poster child for that story but can't recall the company just now. It's either in the archives or on my work laptop that was seized by the ATF. I'll get it back but not soon. I have a shit ton of data on their. Should have labeled every file as childporn#23,452,769.mov so they had to open and check every God damn file top to bottom

That once they release the gas too fast the pressure drops, and if the hole hits an underlying water layer it'll press water into the hole that provides counter pressure to the gas (i.e. reducing flow).

>That once they release the gas too fast the pressure drops
The pressure always drops, that is why the oil/gas/water flows to the well - the well is a pressure sink.

>and if the hole hits an underlying water layer
I hope you are joking, there is always water, water drive is a thing too, they can simply squeeze off perfs to reduce water flow, install bridge plug below, or cement off the bottom, or isolate the top. Operators are constantly drilling, redrilling, completing, re-completing or stimulating wells to control pressure and fluid (oil gas water) flow to the well. They also produce water from one or more zones and inject the water in other locations and zones to control/manipulate pressures to increase production.

You should review online well files to leran how much/many changes and the types of changes and tests that are made to wells for production injection operations and monitoring. State agencies collet a lot of info on production and you download or scrape the data and perform your own decline analysis and estimate project performance or field life (there are many factors that influence both). and watch some youtube vids on reservoir engineering.

Someone asked for something juicy that they can sink their teeth into. Here goes.
Many coal mines are no longer hiring miners from out of state -- AT ALL! Not even with 10 years of experience operating all underground machinery. No exceptions.
Also, MSHA 40 hour underground coal mining classes are now being taught in Spanish. The migrants coming across the border are technically, in most cases, considered legal migrants because they claim to be "asylum seekers." So they can get a work permit.
I suspect the coal mines want to go on a hiring spree replacing white miners (they're mostly white) with Hispanic ones.
The days of coal miners making $120,000 per year might be coming to an end. Maybe you'll have 5'4" Guatemalans mining the coal for $40,000 per year.
Every coal job application asks if you're Hispanic or not, and asks your race. DEI has slowly been creeping into the coal industry.
Maybe I'm wrong. Maybe I'm being overly vigilant. Who knows!
But from what I'm seeing, I'm suspicious.
If the coal industry starts making white miners train their Honduran replacements and then slashing wages -- and coal companies have an UGLY HISTORY for being ruthless exploiters -- then I'm out.

If many experienced coal miners do get the boot in favor of our new "asylum" residents, then they should go to China, Indonesia, India, Russia etc., who love American coal mining expertise.
But from what I've seen, most coal miners almost shit their pants when I suggest going to mine in countries like those, because "Where's much MSHA."
I do like coal miners but think safety regulations have perhaps gone too far. I'd go to China and work Chinese coal mines. I don't fear death and my close family are gone, sadly. So I wouldn't mind dying doing what I love.
Plus the vast majority of Chinese miners who spend decades-long careers in the mines and don't die.
I'd also willingly go to Russia to mine coal, or Indonesia -- wouldn't be too fond of India, though.
