I interviewed for a railroad company not long ago. The pay was $20 an hour and some days they work 5 hours and some days they work 14. They also rotate shifts so its five on 3 off. Basically you can never have any plans or social life. I'd recommend bus driver for an entry level job for people approaching 40. They pay decent, not hard on the body, and good chance of getting a pension after 20 years.

>t. Water treatment plant operator
I currently work the wastewater side of water treatment, the work is cake 90% of the time, and 10% bust your ass manual labor, but you'll be fine if you're in decent shape. I mostly do rounds, readings, test influent / effluent water samples, and do light maintenance on equipment when necessary. Pay started at $19.40 for my municipality, but jumped up to $23.35 after I got my CDL which I basically got for free. Our union contract is being renewed 2024, so my pay will most likely jump up to $25 or $26 with retro pay included. Since it's a town job, my benefits are fuckin' sweet, I get over two weeks vacation, and three weeks sick a year, plus personal and comp days. I work 3:30 pm to 11:30 pm, so there's obviously issues with hanging out easily while working a night job. Getting my license bumps me up another dollar of pay and virtually guarantees employment for life with whoever I work for, and if I leave to another town / company, my pay will increase another 20k if I want it. My associates degree got me and lab experience got me in the door, but you can get this job if you're willing to work and learn.

I can't speak for the drinking water side of water treatment, but I heard the pay is better and work is cleaner, since you're basically disinfecting water that already has most solids removed from it and is being converted into potable water. As always, with pay and working conditions, YMMV.

My brother in Christ, there's a thread on /k/ where they answer military recruitment questions all the time, you can ask all your questions on there if you need to. I'll summarize the majority of answers you're gonna get if you don't want to waste your time.

Do not join the military. Seriously. Do not join. Period. It's not what you think it is. Your delusions of "patriotic duty" and "heroism" will be shattered. Ask any veteran if they would recommend you join today. In case you didn't know, veterans are the true gatekeepers of any future recruitment into the military, because they will tell you first hand what it's really about. But, if you're gonna go ahead and ignore this warning, you should ONLY join if you're gonna get a unique / rare skill or certification out of it, like a top secret clearance to help you land some type of high paying cyber security job.

But what would I know, I don't know shit about the military because I didn't join, so my opinion on it is a moot point.

>so you didnt have to get a license to get hired at first?
Nope, I had an associates degree in "general science" that I got at community college a while back, but my main selling point was my previous experience working in quality control laboratories and plumbing. You don't need any license to get your foot in the door, but like I said, you do need to emphasize your willingness to work hard and learn. If this is a drinking water plant you're applying to, they might be a bit more strict on the people they hire, but if you've got a good head on your shoulders and no criminal or drug use history, you should be fine. This industry as a whole is hurting for new talent because all the boomers are retiring and nobody wants to work in this field, everybody wants a cush wfh job. The big secret is I can spend most of my time either reading or on my phone because the pace of work is super lax and the plant mostly runs itself, unless you get high flows during a storm, then it's all hands on deck. They're gonna have a hard time turning away a newbie whose a hard-charger and want to git gud.

Just remember, since you gonna be new, so your shifts might not be ideal, I was given the opportunity to work nights instead of days, so it has it's pros and cons. Other places have rotating shifts, where you work a few days in the afternoon, and a few at night. Some are monthly rotations which is better and more consistent.

Another is the people you'll work with, they're the salt of the earth. I've met some amazing people in this field, and some real salty ass motherfuckers too. For whatever reason, whether it's personal life issues, substance problems, or just straight up being wired different, some people can be absolute bastards. Many such cases when working with tradies. For the most part, guys who end up in this field are pretty chill in the first place, and the shit-bags are well known by the others, so just take things as they come and try to stay objective. If you stay and get yourself licensed, you'll literally be recession-proof. Good luck and Godspeed fren.

37, similar boat. Didn't finish university by like 3 credits, and employment prospects in geology were grim anyway, so waged in sales for 10 years.
Went to the oilpatch last year and it was terrible work with morons who take pride in being worked like beasts of burden and their lifted pick-up trucks.

So going to cash out my BTC in 2024 and get into aviation. You can get trained pretty quick and into the seat of an airliner within 1.5 years in Europe. At least it's an office with a nice view.

Unironically, not the answer you'll want to hear, but obviously choose something with a huge projected job increase:
Trades, Registered Nurse, CS

The end, all 3 of those are excellent careers that are easy to start fresh, it's too late to do something that'll take 5-6 years to start. Do something that can allow you to switch fully within 2-3 years and obviously do something with amazing career growth opportunities, don't overthink, most people are fucking idiots and make tons of money. You didn't get there by being stupid, you got there by being stuck in the mentality of a loser. If you don't believe you can turn it around, you'll never.

people saying tradie are coping imo, the path to making bank as a tradie is
>pick up skills working for someone getting way underpaid in your 20s
>use your little money to start buying your own tools
>eventually use your tools and skills to go into business for yourself instead of working for someone else
>by the time you're old and getting busted, you can hire some 20something to do all of the hard work for you for peanuts and perpetuate the cycle

Granted, if you are young, this is an excellent career path because an entire generation of men refuses to do this shit because you do have to eat shit for awhile in your 20s to get going and possibly wreck your body.

I agree that sales is actually a good option if you have the knack. If you don't know, try and if it doesn't work out within a year you only wasted a year. Retail is actually not terrible either as long as you aren't a sad sack and can establish yourself as a reliable and intelligent person. The bar is incredibly low and a lot of retailers promote management from within. I know multiple 30 year old boomers who went into retail wagecucking during the pandemic and are now in management positions making $50-80k just by being the one eyed men in the land of the blind.

People switch careers in their 60's. Most people die very soon after they stop having something to live for, which is often their job. Life is extremely fragile and fleeting, and while shitposting and playing games may seem fun while you're young and sharp - such frivolous activities as an older person will quickly result in dis-regulated biorhythms, greatly accelerating the loss of mental and physical prowess. Just remember, spreading misery instead of hope bears a cosmic, karmic weight.

yes, this is a terrible approach. I'm a director at a PaaS company and I honestly don't even hire college grads anymore, just self-taught devs. they're smarter, they're hungry, and their experience is far more valuable to me than anything they'll "learn" from some faggot professor.

here's what I suggest: apply for jobs as a project manager, and in your interview talk about your exceptional organization skills, your ability ability to process information, and your willingness to learn. they're the most important traits for this role. it's a glorified secretary role, so unless you're an absolute retard, you aren't going to need any experience. you book meetings, you listen in on calls, you take notes for setting the next meeting. easy shit.

while you're in this role, express an interest to learn what the devs do. they will be more than happy to coach you and tell you what you need to know. learning the job in your free time looks good to your bosses that you're taking initiative, and you'll be trusted enough to earn promotions and raises. once you've gained the experience you need (1-2 yrs, maybe sooner), you can transition over a dev. meanwhile, you've a living wage along the way instead of having been saddled with useless debt from a university. you'll also have the skills to move to another employer if you get bored or want more money.

do this and stick with it. if you fail at this, you would've never gotten your CS degree anyway. good luck.

the concept is a bit hippie, but what it is you live and help out on a host farm, and at the least they give you lodging and a few meals. some might pay a stipend. Some farms are ultra tiny, and some are closer to industrial size, the hosts are required to write about themselves and their farms so you aren't let down.

Skipped the whole apprenticeship and just challenged the license with enough hours. Nobody realizes there is a shortage right now because of all the anti-union psyop, immigration and EEfags going into tech. While everyone complains, I will simply take advantage of the situation.

is the CMA that well recognized? I know CPA is the gold standard, and it's a lot more than just a cert - it's a license. CPA is kind of off the table for me since it requires an accounting bachelors, and like 30 more accounting units which essentially equates to a master's degree. Then, you gotta wage under a CPA for a couple years and then take the 3 part test. Our company's CPA got his license when all you needed was to take the test i believe, now you have to jump through all these hoops.
