Thanks for sharing fren, there's much to be said for the simple minimalist elegance of such pieces. They may not grab one's attention while juxtaposed with ostentatious Victorian items bursting with complex and busy but ultimately meaningless florid scrollwork, but in-hand the total unpretentious honesty of unadorned silver is extremely appealing. Those pieces where it is purely the rich warm luster of the sterling itself which command's one's attention are severely underrated. I have a ~10oz capacity tumbler cup of the same simple style which I like using (it's the cup holding a bunch of silverware at the front right on top of the platter here). Weighs around 140g so it's quite sturdy for its size. I definitely recommend getting and using additional pieces like these, keep it up and good luck at your next estate sales anon!

ps : i was visiting frens the past few days so i couldn't answer you about the last slurpings. Also sad i could only witness the 'nam debacle with a delay, it was hilarious, my sides were hurting reading the past 2 threads. I've seen you were very inspired, a modern time troubadour chanting the epics of our favorite, full time, cum gurgling fudder.

On my end it was pretty grim when i came back home and opened my weekly purchases. 2 of them the second i cracked them open i knew it was plated trash (one was a milk cup, the other were the 8x knives holders).
The 161g of coins + bracelet you were curious about, well, same disappointment to a lesser extent : the bracelet was in brass (how the fuck can sellers mistake it for silver is beyond me), and one of the coin was a fake (a 10 francs Turin 1934, very common, low quality fake from that era in what seems to be an alloy of tin and lead, not the first time i come across this specific old-era fake).
Plus no rare coin, only decent find in the lot was a 1909 Leopold II 50c in great condition, but it's worth like 5 bux maybe, nothing extravagant.

Only good thing is i surprised myself at how good i became at spoting fakes and plated vomit at first sight lately. When i started scrapmaxxing then numisfagging, it was by far my biggest fear.
Overall all those wont cost me anything, i already asked for a return for the 2 shipments of electroplated crap, and the seller with the coins accepted to refund me to the weight/$ prorata of what wasn't in silver in the lot. But it's still annoying to waste my time at the post office sending back crap, even if it doesn't cost me monies. And more importantly, it's tied capital i could have better spent elsewhere in the meantime.

Anyway, any addition from your side scrapfren?

He then cope-posted again like the retard he is to try to save face, acting like the $12 meal he was delivering on a room service cart was actually his, and then we figured out he is working at the "Bamboo Village Beach Resort & Spa" in Phan Thiet, Binh Thuan, Vietnam, a disease-ridden sex-tourism shithole where it costs less per night than a roach-infested motel here in the USA!!!

It's a 2021.

I question what the point of 1oz silver coins are if not for circulation, why pay such a high premium for a 1oz coin if it isn't going to be used as a 1oz coin?

I chose to handle it and not encapsulate it because I wanted to see how bad it would get and how quickly. This is exactly the reason why I don't like silver, it tarnishes and tones so quickly. It's a metal that is designed to bait poorfrogs due to it's lustre and then in no time, shits fucked.

What also doesn't make sense to me; when I look up old silver coins like 1960's Canadian silver dollars they look pretty damn good for being circulated coins from that era. However, google says silver coins with copper alloy should tarnish/corrode quicker because of the copper reacting to sulfide in the air, so tufuq.

I'll be focusing on gold and platinum into the future starting with pic rel.

Ah ok, well that's a good reason to have missed participating in the epic roasting of our resident impoverished Jewtard. Very sorry to hear that the deliveries were largely disappointments, but for as much of a liability as eBay's return policies are for us as sellers it makes scrapping almost risk-free, one would have to have the mind of a DELETard to fuck it up. I've never heard of the contemporary counterfeit Turin francs, do they have any collector value in spite of being base metal? There are counterfeit Thomas Jefferson 5 cent coins made in the 1950s here called "Henning Nickels" which sell for $50+ to collectors nowadays, I kinda want one for my collection too.

And yeah I totally expected you to quickly develop a good eye for fakes and plated junk after gaining a little hands-on experience, you clearly have the right mind for that sort of thing. And that ability just keeps getting better over time, in another year or 2 you'll look back and clearly see how much sharper your already keen scrapchad's eye has become!

The only thing to report is this weighted sterling candelabra I bought yesterday for exactly $18 with shipping and tax on an e-commerce site like Etsy. It was listed a week earlier and just sat until I came around so I think the competition hasn't found the place yet, I'll definitely be digging deeper there. I figure it'll yield around 80g of sterling so nothing to brag about, the most noteworthy thing it represents is that I found a whole new e-commerce website to slurp cheapies from!

>'ve never heard of the contemporary counterfeit Turin francs, do they have any collector value in spite of being base metal?
Not much, from what i understand they were quite common. Since the seller refused to pay the shipping fees to get it back, it's now mine, so i'll earn maybe 3€ from it. Pic rel is the coin in question, the weight of a normal one is 10gr, and even beyond the look, the texture is really different, way more rough at the touch.

>in another year or 2 you'll look back and clearly see how much sharper your already keen scrapchad's eye has become!
Definitely, and it's really an indispensable ability these days, no joke at least 60% of the silverware sold as "sterling silver" here is just plated trash. Most of the time it's easy to tell when there is enough wear or the hallmarks are visible, but in low res pics taken in the dark like for those knives holders, you have to take your chance.

>I figure it'll yield around 80g of sterling so nothing to brag about, the most noteworthy thing it represents is that I found a whole new e-commerce website to slurp cheapies from!
Congrats, and yes it is something to brag about, i'd kill to have my average in single digit territory like you.
About Etsy, glad you found a new hunting ground. I thought it was mostly for single moms selling glass beads necklaces and roasties selling "witchcraft" potions, but apparently it expended a lot lately.
Over here we have Leboncoin as an alternative to ebay. Good thing is there is only a 4% commission, so as a seller it's great. But the flip side is the seller can put any price he want and you have to haggle with them afterward, it's not an auction system. So it's very messy and sellers cancel all the time your purchase if they believe you got a good deal. I find it very difficult to use.
Etsy is on fixed prices too rather than auctions?

Oh yeah that's cool fren, very clearly a cast counterfeit. I wonder if those were made in Germany and sent in bulk to be used by their agents in France to undermine the still-depressed economy and demoralize hapless frogs before they got blitzed? If not Germans then the only other explanation is that those counterfeits are the handiwork of France's own domestic infestation of eternal Jewry.

>Etsy is on fixed prices too rather than auctions?

Yes, and the other similar website I bought the candelabra from is also fixed-price only format. You can submit best offers on the websites though which is a nice feature, I should try spamming obvious noob sellers with lowball offers to see what sticks. eBay gets the most action of course, but if you have remotely decent alternative e-commerce platforms they won't have as many competing scrappers so you should give them a close look for cheapies.

>I chose to handle it and not encapsulate it because I wanted to see how bad it would get and how quickly
No you didn't handle it, you left it alone and sad on a shelf. The more you handle silver, the less it tarnishes, it's well known. I know it's not just an urban myth, because i use the same silver forks/spoons on a daily and since i use them all the time they always keep their luster. Same goes for my lucky coin i play with every day (1oz wiener).

The tarnish will also depend on where you live. The more polluted your area, the more sulfur in the air to glue itself to your silver.

>due to it's lustre and then in no time, shits fucked.
It's not "fucked", your silver is still there and it's still worth the exact same amount. If you want to see it lustre back you have countless non-abrasive petrochemical cleaning lotions who will make it shine after few seconds of rubbing, and most even add a protective layer who prevent further tarnishing for 6 months or more.

>What also doesn't make sense to me; when I look up old silver coins like 1960's Canadian silver dollars they look pretty damn good for being circulated coins from that era
That i can't explain it, but it's very true i noticed it too. Many alloyed silver coins don't tarnish much, while you'll see milk spots and tarnish appear in no time with .999 ozers. Especially the lizard ones, my britannia milk spotted within hours, could almost see it happen in real time lol. Meanwhile pic rel for example is over 100yo and still super shiny, but i bought it from a lot where it wasn't sealed or anything.

So is this only a conservation issue, or is it due to maybe chemical residus accelerating the process on newly minted coins? I'm really curious about why new pure silver coins milk spot and tarnish so fast compared to old constitutional.

>eBay gets the most action of course, but if you have remotely decent alternative e-commerce platforms they won't have as many competing scrappers so you should give them a close look for cheapies.
Definitely, i'll scour the interwebs to find alternatives. I love ebay, but the competition is really fierce.
Speaking of ebay, something i started to do lately is directly connect on my account with a .de, .it, etc.. domain, to start to slurp on stuff with international arbitrage. For the US i'm sure you could make a killing fren, with 5RM selling for $25+ when you can get them in bulk on .de for below half this price, and the international shipping fees aren't too outrageous too.

So, why buy it as a 1oz coin with such a high premium? If you are purely stacking for investment purposes why not buy bars or literally anything other than 1oz coins so you can get 10-20% more metal for your money?
>Focusing on it for what? Your picrel will tarnash, too.
I think it's well known that gold does not tarnish nearly as quickly as silver.

>No you didn't handle it, you left it alone and sad on a shelf. The more you handle silver, the less it tarnishes, it's well known.
So you have to handle all of your silver coins regularly so they don't tarnish? This is just unrealistic and sounds like peasants work. I've also read the complete opposite of what you're saying countless times, people wear gloves while handling it for a reason.
>It's not "fucked", your silver is still there and it's still worth the exact same amount.
Nah, it's fucked. It looks fucked and you're coping. It isn't worth the exact same amount to me, If you think people are going to pay the exact same amount for a mint fresh maple as a scuffed shit covered leaf then ok, but I'm not betting on that. I soaked that exact maple in baking soda and boiling water 19 days ago, pic rel is what it looked like afterwards, in 18 days it got as fucked as the original img.

I would really like to know what you meant by used as coins. Many people do buy bars. But for various reasons 1oz coins are still very popular. The gold coin you pictured has silver and copper in it. "Use it as a coin" to me means exchange it for its face value. If you just mean trade it for its value in silver for something else then a generic round can do the same thing. As for why people like coins:
In some jurisdictions, because coins are legal tender, they are not taxed or subject to customs. For example, you cross a border and go into a country and they ask if you have anything to declare. If you have over a certain amount of gold you may be subject to duties. But for many places because it is a legal tender, the value is only face value and you wouldn't be over the threshold for duties. Another benefit is that it is that much more difficult to fake, because as your Maple shows, sovereign mints usually put a lot of effort into coins being more elaborate than generic rounds and that assurance carries weight with people. There is also the legal implication of faking currency. There are other reasons as well but those are the practical ones.

I haven't done it for a while, but I used to sign in to .de and .es a lot in my hunt for ancient/medieval artifacts and coins. Bought a sweet collection of coins on the .it site too with an eclectic mix of ancient roman, scythian, medieval english hammered silver, 18-19th century coins and tokens, and some 20th century sterling silver coins all for just $40, it was ridiculous. Had to use a parcel forwarding service in Italy to smuggle it out (export of coins forbidden kek) which added another $20 but it still would have been a steal if it cost me another $200. I had gobs of fun looking for cheapies that europoors didn't know are rare and valuable, I ought to dust off that strategy again.

Ah forgot about it, but with my brother we also accidentally found a mass grave not far from the communal graveyard. Was full of skellies, we didn't bother digging much and we already saw a dozen craniums. Probably where the old skeletons whose concession ended were ditched here to make room for fresh cadavers in the graveyard just behind.

One thing i remember shocked me a bit was we couldn't find any hand, so i was wondering if the people working there or the gravediggers tore away the hands of the deads to take the rings and bracelets away. Or maybe smaller bones simply degrade much faster and fall off, idk.

Everything in that pic is ancient Scythian from the Black Sea region and believe it or not I have several hundred additional bronze arrowheads and lots of other proto-coins not in that pic. The bronze dolphins and the 5 leaf-shaped things under the Panther head strap mount are all actually coins (proto-coins), they were Scythian small-change worth 1/10th of an Obol, or 1/60th of a silver Drachm. Not really interested in opening a museum because I'd have to deal with braindead normoids and faggots whose opinions I couldn't care less about, I'm perfectly happy hoarding for my own pleasure alone

That's really cool fren, was it a solid shot or an explosive shell? Do you have an idea how heavy it is? Here are 3/5ths of my 13th century hand-carved stone catapult balls I had to declare as "Sandstone Mineral Nodule Specimens" to sneak out of Spain kek, they are from the front lines of the Catholic Reconquista and hopefully caved-in the chests of a few goatfuckers and perfidious Sephardic subhumans before retiring and coming over to chill with me for a while.

>I question what the point of 1oz silver coins are if not for circulation
In circulation it gets polished by many hands fondling it, it will develop a patina that protects it. Often those coins for circulation have a more robust alloy too, silver alone soft and tarnishes faster.

>I chose to handle it and not encapsulate it because I wanted to see how bad it would get
What is your verdict? I would say it's bad.

>I'll be focusing on gold and platinum into the future starting with pic rel.
9999 gold will almost never change, but less pure gold will tarnish a bit too. Check out picrel, the Krugerrand i bought to have a coin to fondle. It has a slight patina because of the silver and copper in the alloy.

As for your silver coin, it's still an oz of silver and it should clean up too.
I bought anti tarnish paper for silver, cut it into fine strips and put all my silver bullion coins in capsules with some of the paper.
They look like the first day i bought them.
I also only handle uncirculated coins with cotton gloves.

Yep. And dedollarization is a real thing that's been coming for a long time.
BRICS aligned countries have actually been building the foundations for it for many years.
Some experts say a boom in commodities prices to begin mid 2024 and rally for a year or more
Then big crash expected.
I'm trying to resolve some kind of personal strategy to protect against the inevitable negative effects
Seems like anything we but with today's dollars is likely to be worth 2 to 4 times or more in next year's dollars.
But there will be the crash which could be either a big recession or a depression. So eventually we could see values drop through the floor at some point through the worst of it.
So on one hand I want to get out of fiat.
But at the same time it would be critical to have the cash to buy during the big crash dip.

Heh, I was mostly joking but if I ever come across a cheap old medical school skeleton or box of old prepared anatomy class skulls I'm hoovering 'em up. I haven't looked in years but ratty old skulls missing teeth and the lower jaw would still sell in the $500 range, intact ones can range from near $1000 to nearly 10K if it shows dramatic pathologies or is something like an ancient "conehead" elongated cranium skull from tribes that wrapped the heads of babies. Oof, you're in Ukraine? I'm happy you haven't been sent to the meat grinder and are still with us anon. Tons of treasure to be found further south or in your slice of the Carpathian Basin region, I hope you manage to go find some oneday. I recognize your lovely c. 215 AD Caracalla Antoninianus, one of those is still on my want-list. The wide planchets and ~5g weight makes them particularly impressive compared to normal Denarii, and their significance in monetary history as being the coins which marked the beginning of Rome's catastrophic path toward total debasement later that century make them yet more interesting. I have a good number of artifacts I've never photographed or shared from the immediate Black Sea area, Of note is a pair of early Scythian late bronze age/early iron age cast bronze axe heads from a cache that a detectorist dug up in Crimea. They found 4 similar flat bronze axe heads similar to the flat type "sagaris" or later flat iron "tethered axe" and one fancier and heavier socketed battle axe, so I got the latter and selected the best of the flat examples. I'll dig them out of storage and post pics soon if interested.

Good to hear life is comfy anon! Metal detecting is pretty popular across Ukraine, I wonder if you live near any medieval or ancient settlements or historic battle sites? Some of the nicest flint and stone European Neolithic artifacts come from Ukraine too, there is a vast wealth of history in that part of the world.
>How do you preserve them from rusting further?
That's a good question, I still need to figure out how the pros do it, but generally you need to submerge and soak the iron artifacts in distilled water to dissolve and remove salts and other chemicals, then discard the water, soak more, discard, soak some more etc. until the damaging salts and contamination is gone. There is a tannic acid bath treatment some use to create a stable skin of Iron Tannate which protects iron from further oxidation, and there are different sealants people use like dipping in hot melted paraffin wax or applying microcrystalline paraffin "RenWax" paste. I have read about but don't really understand other more sophisticated dips/treatments some museums use to stabilize surfaces, I have much more to learn.

And yeah, you'll have no shortage of interesting pieces to study and collect if you're focusing on the coinage of Caracalla. I'm definitely more of a broad-scope generalist collector but I recognize the appeal of specializing and respect the expertise and discipline it requires. Please post more of your collection, is there anything in particular you're looking to acquire next? Dunno if you've ever looked at the entries over on Wildwinds.com but including Provincial issues there are thousands of different coins, that alone could keep a person busy for multiple lifetimes:

Cool, condition is great. And i totally agree, break this thing up, i hate this US trend of plastic cuck-caging every coin they can put their hand onto. It's so fucking retarded, especially for the shitty condition ones.

Only maybe the top 1% condition of coins should be slabbed. It's utterly pointless for the rest. And it will inevitably promote scamming too, as fake slabs are incredibly easy to make for chinks, and once slabbed you can't weight nor efficiently loupe in your coins. It gives a false sense of safety. Truly a jewish business.

They're the last best realm of numismatics where bargains are the norm. I've seen plenty of retard collectors of more modern numismatics, but never met a dumbfuck ancient coin collector either. Navigating and collecting ancients is much more complicated than filling a Whitman book of Wheat Cents or Merc dimes, a pursuit that even an idiot like IQDELET could manage if he had any money. Since fresh ancients can only be found randomly by detectorists there has never been an effective way for dealers to control supply, and thus no incentive for them to astroturf demand and aggressively promote ancient coins the way they promoted 20th century US coinage. The variance in patinas, integrity of surfaces, strength of strike, die pairings and the state of the dies and many other factors also makes it far more difficult to build broad market consensus grading and value charts like we have with modern coinage.

>Gold and silver, taken from the ground of the earth, evoking the two most prominent heavenly bodies, sun and moon, is incredibly poetic, almost uncomfortable to contemplate.

My nigga, sounds like you might enjoy the relatively scarce ancient Roman coins depicting the goddess Aeternitas, the personification of Eternity. The 2 I have in pic are denarii of Hadrian, there are several other Roman issues and different denominations depicting Aeternitas but on coins she is a rare deity. The goddess is shown holding the head of the golden Sun god Sol in one hand and the silver Moon goddess Luna in the other. I always thought the symbolism of Gold and Silver transcending time in the arms of Eternity was sublime, and having that ancient understanding of the everlasting nature of these 2 celestial metals struck on a silver coin from 1,900 years ago further reinforces the point! 10/10 I'd highly recommend finding one of your own anon.

>Jooz having a hard time banking on them/cornering efficiently the market is enough of a reason to start collecting them. Also they just look great. Simple as.

Yep, simple as indeed fren. It would take me a bit to collect and articulate my thoughts but as objects ancient coins are almost at the furthest opposite end of the spectrum from things like Beanie Babies or Funko-pops. Unlike that modern soi-infused consoomerslop or even most coins made on a mass industrial scale over the past 200 years they all inherently and observably unique, you wouldn't even be able to find 2 pieces made the same day by the same man with the same dies that are a perfect match. That coupled with a limited and widely distributed supply that can only be increased by the thousands of people going out with detectors and digging 100 pieces of garbage for every coin, an activity which itself may become legislated into oblivion in our lifetimes, largely immunizes them from semitic market-cornering and centralization of supply, large scale shilling and other shenanigans which inflate the bubbles seen in almost all other markets. As more people get educated and learn that ancient coins can actually be owned by individuals instead of just museums, and as mankind's hunger for authenticity and SOVL grows stronger in a world that is growing more soulless and homogenized by the day, there's nowhere but upward for the value and demand for such pieces to climb.

Cash wise it's been pretty rough for me the past few weeks as my health degraded quite a bit (fuckin' rain all day long is killing me bones), so i couldn't be as efficient as i planned. But i'll soon be in the process of liquidating what's left of RL cards from my mtg store, and i plan to convert the cash into ancient coins. It probably will be slow paced as i'm new to it, but i hope i'll have some stuffs you'll enjoy looking at, and your advices will be most welcomed.

I also feel a certain numbers of anons here are getting interested on the topic of ancient coins, and maybe like me they were on the fence for a while, tempted by seeing all those beautiful pics, but rebutted by a self-imagined price tag (before you started to post about those, i thought any 2000yo silver coin was worth like 500 bux minimum..) and overwhelmed by the quantity of infos.

I was shocked the last meme coin actually shipped. Crusader fags have been waiting almost a year for their meme coin and they're still arguing over the design while mintanon shows up and apologizes every now and then.

His existence makes me sick. I like to think of him as a joker from the medieval times. The more entertaining he is, he less likely he's to visit the chopping block.

Don't FOMO my fren, the ancient coins have been around for thousands of years and won't disappear anytime soon so the most important thing to do is invest in educating yourself and applying your autistic energies to the things you might like to specialize in. You don't want to go full retard and buy hundreds of mediocre pieces that won't give you much pleasure. Instead you should be patient, do research to understand the market and the rarities and values for the things you like, and then try to slurp only the occasional truly superior specimens at bargain prices that you'll come to recognize as you get more familiar with everything. Since you like Greco-Egyptian history I recommend the early Ptolemaic bronzes, they struck a bunch of different denominations from fractional obols of a few grams up to huge 3+oz chonkers so building an emperor and denomination run of Ptolemaic ancients like in pic could be quite rewarding. The bottom left coin where Alexander the GOAT is wearing an elephant-skin headdress is a bronze Obol struck by the OG Ptolemy I Soter and is probably among the rarest and most valuable in the handful, its condition is uncommonly high. The coinage didn't get reformed and standardized on the basis of their huge bronze drachms instead of silver until Ptolemy II

Might be more worthwhile than the SIM card schizo's scheme to buy 10s of thousands of cards via 1 cent or free promotional deals and then put them all in a chemical bath recirculating through a water feature in his house to remove the gold foils. Not likely to be more successful by too much though lol, have fun anon.
