I don't think people really appreciate how easy it is to get stuck in a massive trade. LTCM did this in the 1990s where they were taking on these MASSIVE positions in things like Italian bonds. They shorted on the run and were buying up older bonds and trusting that the prices would converge. Only to have the prices move in the opposite direction that it has always done previously, they had no capacity to unwind their trade and all they could do was sit in hemorrhage money until they got bailed out.
They were bailed out because of their derivatives positions posed counterparty risks.
The problem Wallstreet is having is they actually can't unwind this trade because one of the counterparties is retail and to do so would admit their guilt. Also, short selling is one of the most dangerous forms of leverage because now that everyone knows they are naked short, the market is essentially illiquid. We've all been sitting here for 3 years memeing about multi million dollar shares prices and this has everyone very very VERY worried.
