I ended up just prying the sensors off and putting them in two paper cups. Every 10 minutes I'd just pick one up, scan it, and then throw it in the other cup....then do it all over again. About an hour before my shift ended I'd glued them all back on for the next guard.

From there I went on to do loss prevention and made a killing by organizing a "controlled arrest" or at least that's what I called it, where someone I knew would come into the store and act all suspicious and then make a big deal and start screaming at me and threatening to fight me....while his girlfriend would rob the store blind in a baby stroller (with no baby in it) and then I'd just "ban" him from the store. My town is very boring (although safe) and the demographic is pretty old. The median household income is $56k, but most of the basic/starter homes are around $300k with almost no yard. My rent is about 2x - 3x cheaper than most mortgages. Even when the rates were at 3%, the mortgage on most homes with 20% down was like $1,600 a month.

The way they set up the system is kind of fucked up because of changes they've made over the last few years. We have supervisors with more seniority and experience making less than floor workers. The management is absolute garbage. I keep looking for other jobs, but everything within a 20 mile radius pays less and has shittier benefits, or requires a degree. If I'm meeting for the first time someone who happens to be a medical specialist or a white collar professional in finance or law, then yeah absolutely it can be a touch embarrassing to divulge what I do for a living. It feels a little intimidating because there's a very clear gap between someone who went through an extensive and difficult education to build a career in a prestigious or otherwise demanding industry that requires a lot of intelligence and competence. My girlfriend had a friend who's engaged to a cybersecurity analyst making about $250k AUD/year, and also had another friend who was in a relationship with a civil engineer. While he was early career he was a smart guy with a lot of potential so spending time together was awkward to say the least, even Blind Freddy could see that he had absolutely zero respect for my job and thought I wasn't much more than a dumb wagie.

On the other hand a lot of the "normal" people that I associate with sometimes seem in awe of what I do because having a government job in a heavily unionised industry that pays relatively well is desirable to a lot of people who never had much opportunity in life. I didn't have to go to university so I didn't need to make a great deal of investment financially or time-wise to get this job, but it is artificially quite difficult to get in.

In all honesty though most days I think back to when I was younger and wish I had gone to university and studied law or economics or something. Rationally I know it's a little silly to be embarrassed about telling people what I do for a living, but I can't help thinking that people would have more interest and respect for me if I were in professional industry.

I just got out of the military a couple months ago and I've got job interviews lined up for some pet hospital as an X-ray tech, and two interviews to be a cable installer for either Dish or AT&T.
