"What basis? Indeed, we cannot see that, in this respect, there can be any other criterion, any other standard, than gold. Oh, yes! Gold, which never changes its nature, which can be shaped into bars, ingots or coins, which has no nationality and which is eternally and universally-accepted as the unalterable fiduciary value par excellence. Moreover, despite everything that could be imagined, said, written, done, as huge events happened, it is a fact that there is still today no currency that can compare, either by a direct or an indirect relationship, real or imagined, with gold." Just gonna say that I don't think right now is a good time to buy silver or gold if your money is in USD, I strongly believe that the rest of the world is about to get hit with a recession and will start cutting rates long before the US, this will strengthen the usd while hitting PMs, we will also see demand destruction.
It's when the recession starts hitting the US and they start cutting rates is when you should buy.

If you don't want to try timing things, then just slowly accumulate, but I wouldn't recommend big purchases just yet as I think the USD will strengthen over the next few months.

NFA and I do have a stack of PMs, but you get bigger gains if you time your purchases right.

>I strongly believe that the rest of the world is about to get hit with a recession and will start cutting rates long before the US
How long do you think the US can last at 5.50% when it adds 1T of federal debt each quarter just in interests to bonds bearers?
I know this is just a giant clownfest, but the dam is already breaking from all sides. Our current system built on eternal growth (of debt) isn't designed to sustain monetary contractions.

Witness the deliquency rates skyrocket while banks refuse to lend (thus refuse create new debt-money) to the private sector because they prefer the sweet coupons' yields of daddy gubment. Economy will grind to a halt, and it's already going south extremely fast in many sectors.
I don't give it 5-6 months before they reverse the trend, claiming the 'soft landing' was a tremendous success (with their cooked numbers).

So yes, deflation will hit PMs, alongside all other asset classes for a short period of time, but the minute they announce rates going down, G&S will immediately spike. So be sure to not get caught with your pants down when it happens.
The good strategy may be to load up on cash for the next 3-4 months MAX then slurp the dip, but not much longer fren.

>You can if you sell down the chain.

Anons need to git gud at buying low from normies like dealers do, and then selling high to other normies like those dealers do. It takes more work than buying from some bullion website and opening the box when it arrives several days later, but really isn't as hard or inefficient as some like to pretend. If stacking/collecting is already an enjoyable hobby then it should come naturally, if you're just diversifying assets and PMs carry no more appeal than any other investment then you should just stick to whatever it is that you're already good at.

Maybe. It's really your call.
Why: its spot price is on the mid-lower end of its typical range, so it's fairly safe. Some coins are quite lovely, too. It has a future with hydrogen fuel cells (HFCs) as a catalyst.
Why not: Its current main use is in catalytic converters for IC (gasoline/petrol) engines. These are being phased out in favor of EVs.
I suspect HFCs will grow in popularity: their manufacture has less impact on the environment, refueling is as simple as swapping out canisters, and they weigh less than batteries.
I don't think EVs will ever go away, but HFCs will develop alongside EVs.
I wouldn't suggest buying large quantities on this speculation, but a few coins won't hurt.

Why is it called the "ABC" peso? Panama pills are based, if you like babbysilbers you should look for the little 1/4 Real coins issued by various central/south American countries, Guatemalan ones are most common but places like Peru issued some with nothing but a Llama on one side, they're sweet.

those are mere fractions of obols fren, my smallest is just 1/16th of an obol! In this pic of my rare flying pig coins I have the smallest typical silver denomination called a Tetartemorion which was 1/4th of an obol on the left which weighs about 0.15g, then a low grade obol (Ignore the 0.35g Indian chuckram below it), then a ~1.2g diobol, a triobol or hemidrachm, and on the right a 4 gram full drachm. Nuggety ancient coins look so damn small when you're used to medieval to modern numismatics but you'll get accustomed to it.

Pawn shop? You should ask about other numismatics they might have available now or that they have sitting in limbo for 2 weeks (in case they're stolen) before they can be sold. A fella I knew got a rare 1830 Templeton Reid "Georgia Gold" privately minted $2.50 gold coin for melt value at a pawn shop, flipped it for like $4000 IIRC. Seems like your shop is worth keeping an eye on too, it's not common for a place to be selling coins which could easily be flipped for double or more over what you paid.

Come back anon! Don't let some 1PBTIDs ruin your day or have you questioning the authenticity of everything you've collected. For example I've had anons say that all the silver coins in this pic are fake, but besides checking-out when I studied them under high magnification absolutely no fakes of any types of coins from this whole obscure city-state have been documented. It's easy for envious FUDwits to claim something is fake, but unless it's an extremely poor quality counterfeit you need to be able to study the weight/dimensions, both sides and the edge IRL to confidently make that determination. I think those Thalers are suspect because of the matching toning and milky grey splotchy areas and the fact that I've seen lots of pretty convincing known fake thalers hit the market in the last few years, but I'm no expert in such coins.

Nah, roosevelts and 40% halves are way more cucked than war nickels or quarters, having Chad slaveowners like Jefferson and Washington on our coins making fragile nigs seethe 200 years after they died is based. Also War nickels contain more silver per cent than anything else which one could argue makes them the best form of junk of all, $1 of war nickels contains 35 grams of pure silver whereas standard fractional coins only have 22.5 grams of silver per $1.

True. There are also generic rounds with limited (and gorgeous) designs, but coins have crossover collector interests: numismatists, historians, art collectors, special interest groups, and/or seekers of antiquities (some antique generic bars with no special design also fetch higher prices). The more boxes you can check, the better chances of getting a higher price if you sell. For coins, it's particularly great if you can get the firsts of new series.

Among others, i suppose yes. Still happy though, usually the 6 livres goes for between 400-800 bux. It's one of those few very iconic coins who represent an era/significant event who changed the destiny of a nation.

In an utilitarian sense, isn't money whatever is the unit of account through which prices are the most stable? Like ounces of gold as opposed to dollars for a nice suit. Mercury dimes for a blowjob. Maybe even things like barrels of oil for tanks in the case of nations.

Not sure exactly what you mean by utilitarian. Money is, first and foremost, a medium of exchange. Accounting is a very important, but secondary, function. To be a good medium of exchange, certain properties are needed - scarcity, portability, fungibility, durability, etc. Gold and silver have there properties and that is why they have been used as money for thousands of years all over the world. Barrels of oil, bushels of wheat, and other such commodities are lacking in some of the desirable properties. Some such commodities are not fungible - not all oil is the same. Some lack durability - wheat spoils over time. Neither are easily portable. Some are not scarce - like paper with numbers printed on it.

Prices are not supposed to be stable. They are supposed to fluctuate under a wide range of market information. The most important function of price is to inform the market about supply and demand. For example, when a resource becomes scarce we WANT the price to go up. This tells people to start allocating that resource to the more important (demanded) uses and also to try and increase the supply. Prices are very complicated packages of essential information. This is one of the main reasons command economies fail. And one of the main reasons letting governments and banks monkey with the money supply causes such horrific distortions in the economy.

You're right, I was assuming a comparison of different materials that are all equally suitable in terms of those other properties other than price stability (which is just the inverse of value stability).
Accounting in this case just means measuring the amount of money. You need to know how much you have and how much things cost. The unit in which this is expressed is the unit of account. Today this is usually dollars or other fiat currencies, but you can use anything as your basis. For example, you could look at how much your net worth is in terms of orange juice and then compare the historical prices of things like land, energy, commodities, etc. in terms of orange juice. This will fluctuate based on the price of orange juice more so than due to the prices actually changing (even in inflating dollar terms). This would tell you that orange juice is not very good money in terms of price stability.

The US mint 225 year liberty coin is not collectable because people don't like it. The Royal Mint Una and the Lion bars are now worth much more than spot price because the design was so aesthetically magnificent. You have the power in you to see this.

>got them at a local flea market for $100 a piece

I've gotten unbelievable deals myself at flea markets so it's not always correct that "if it looks too good to be true it it probably is", but since the Philip Ernest and Saxony thalers would be ~$500 coins if genuine and are very rarely available in the USA you need to be very suspicious. When at a market you need to use much discernment and pay attention to the race and attitude of the seller, Turks/gypsies etc should never be trusted for example, and obvious pros at haggling and making deals with all the boxes and display cases necessary for efficient set-up and transportation to markets (versus insecure disorganized noobs) are more likely to both know what they have and also knowingly salt their cheaper genuine offerings with convincing fakes as "wow what a great deal!" bait. Noobs sell fakes too, but it's more often out of innocent ignorance than a calculated scam. You should always pay attention to the other items they have for sale for additional context, if someone is obviously selling off an inherited collection and doesn't know anything you're in luck, but that isn't typical. Since you have them in hand and can measure, weigh, magnet test and study the edges etc. you should search online for documented matching reproductions and compare. They're probably not genuine, but I wasn't there to take in the whole picture so there's a chance you got lucky. Whatever the case, you should be much more careful and observant in the future, and if intuition suggests that something smells fishy you should pay attention to that instinct. Every collector of medieval-ancient items has gotten burned by fakes myself included, but it's a valuable hands-on lesson that can make you much more discerning and savvy after you've learned from the mistake.

Picrel are all forgeries/reproductions, a few I knowingly bought as such cheap but I was less knowledgeable about the coins back then and got fooled. Live & learn fren.

Besides standard old-school coin purses/sacks, they've found ancient bronze bracelet or armlet purses where the opening would have been kept sealed when while it was pushed tight against your skin on your arm, see picrel.

The ancient Greek playwright Aristophanes wrote scenes where characters went to market with the small coins kept in their mouth for safekeeping, it sounds sensible to me:

>Some people today contend that the ancient Greeks carried fractions like this in their mouths when going to and from the marketplace, based on the plays of the Aristophanes, including The Birds, c. 414 BC, and Ekklesiazusae (The Assemblywomen), c. 392 BC, both of which survive, and Aiolosikon, which survives only in fragments or later quotes. In The Birds, a character describes himself looking up in surprise and accidentally swallowing an obol. In Ekklesiazusae, a character describes himself going off to market with a jawful of coppers to buy some flour. In Aiolosikon, a character describes himself carrying a two-obol piece in his mouth. But Aristophanes was a comic playwright, and elsewhere in The Birds he talks about purses or money bags.

Typically the closest you can possibly get to buying spot is 1oz rounds in bulk from a site like Bold precious metals or hero bullion. Rounds are just silver coins privately minted and not from a government but the prices can always swap. Dealer price will never be fair most of the time since they obviously need to make a profit for a living. The thing is at the end of the day whatever premium you pay today will be made up for with time when their value will inevitably be higher. Dealer price will dip and spike almost randomly, like for example today gold is down but silver is a little too pricey for me to buy today.

Typically for gold, the closest to spot would be Latin Monetary Units (old non-British European sovereigns). Ducats, francs... pic related though a Brit sov snuck in at bottom right.
That aside, I'm a fan of getting currently-minted coins. The least expensive would be the usual Maples, Krugerrands (though their color belies them being an alloy), Britannias, Philharmonics, Armenian Arks...
The limited-run coins with moderate premiums are also a good choice as they have potential for numismatic growth - the East Caribbean 8 series, Somali Elephants, Australian roos, kooks...,
If you'rein the US, the US coins are very pricey, but they apparently are also easy to sell and recover that premium (I've never sold any coins of any type, so this is hearsay).

Poppycock. I have AMEX (blue) with about 10k€ credit and a Visa from my bank that i guess offers thrice my monthly income, so roughly 12k€. None costs anything.

Not mega rich, but you need to have your bases covered:
1) Emergency fund, say three times your monthly expenses, more with children
2) maxed pension funds, monthly ETFs
3) no debt beyond a house, not even for a car
4) now you may buy gold

If you don't have your bases covered you may be forced to sell your stack, which is sad if you stack gold, but usually catastrophic if you stack silver. Those 30% premiums? You don't get them back when you have to sell quick.

Metals are a hedge against the monetary/banking system implosion. They dumped hard with the market drawdown of 08-09 GFC, came back a little, and only really took off with the euro debt crisis. And qe. People run to cash in financial downturns, they run to gold when faith in banking systems fails

I made a post about the DXY breaking 106 early this week. It's kept on climbing *very* fucking steady. If it keeps 106 this week, it's headed to 113 next. This is horrible news for the world. It could get to 130 or more, breaking everything in its path. We'd have to have a plaza accords 2.0

Listen to this anon and check out your local coin shops:
>>56213996
>My LCS sells gold at spot. If you have something similar near you, that'll be your best bet for buying fractional gold.

The prices asked by big online bullion dealers tend to be competitive with other online dealers, but you'll never get lucrative below-market cheapies from those retailers. Granted, many coin shops charge prices which would make you think you're in Tel Aviv, but others are extremely based and sell some kinds of gold and silver very cheap compared to online dealers, or even at actual melt/spot price.
