I'd like to buy some property out in the ass end of nowhere so I can do the Uncle Ted thing, (without the whole murder and trying to fix society bit, don't see the appeal), but specifically I want to make sure I get Mineral Rights for said property. Because I don't actually plan to use said land for mining, would you think a good way to get a good deal might be to contact some mining companies who likely already snapped up the land and see if they have any exhausted land they'd want to get rid of cheap? How do I even go about contacting big mining corporations?

realistically are you going to buy enough land that it will actually matter?

There's no shortcut for cheap useable land. If it's cheap you can't do anything with it, no mining company is going to sell you land that is habitable after they're done with it.

Because I've personally known people who got fucked out of their property because they didn't make sure they got mineral rights. (In the Colorado area specifically, though I don't really have any strong opinions on what state I'd be looking for.)
