With the cost of housing constantly increasing, is it a good idea to go buy up trailers, RVs and camper vans and flip them in a few years? Is this a good business to get into? Seems like it's so trendy and there's a lot of money to be made. I remember camper vans use to be so cheap back in the day but now they've gone up so much

that's because tiktok is glorifying vanlife and adding up how much money you are saving in not paying rent so a bunch of people who don't actually need to be homeless are now homeless-by-choice and it's driving the market sky high

RVs are tough. They don’t manufacture that many per year relative to cars so finding a good used one can be difficult. Most of them have a shit ton of mileage and they usually come with issues. If you’re super handy though you could have a profitable idea. Fix mechanical issues, deck out the interior and make it more “homey”. You’d just need to worry about storage which can be costly so make sure to factor that in too. My friend got into them a few years back and if I remember correctly he was paying like $120 a month just to store his.

this is a great point, considering what the current demand is for RVs, if you are capable and have the know how, turning them into mobile studio apartments would be incredibly lucrative, fix up the blatant mechanical issues that usually bring a vehicle down (replace transmission, replace belts) and you can sell that thing for over $100k
Replacing a transmission in a normal car is expensive, but a $6000 investment for a 6 figure return should be considered par for the course
There is potential

You could do a lot of fun things inside that RV in the middle of the night parked on a remote forest road... with your little sister.

Had an RV. Had to get covered storage because their fancy rubber roof gets fucked up if it gets tree sap and crap on it. $120 per month. I didn’t use it much but you have to run everything once in a while so they don’t lock up, the fridge, generator, oven etc. You have to be mechanical if you don’t want to lose your ass on maintenance and interior fixes. There’s always something wrong with them, even if minor. It’s a hobby that people like to tinker with since they love them. If you are in it only for the money, it may feel like a burden to keep them up. I had a 30 foot all in one

Even if the demand goes up, RV's are a depreciating asset.
The best you'll do is break even, adjusted for inflation.

Set up something peripheral to the RV market if you want longevity.

Yah well it's a pretty good reason to buy a camper van but idk if I could actually live in one myself
>>56051890
I'm thinking of buying off boomers only cause they typically have the resources to take care of them or at least store them in a garage or something. Also, I'm really handy and have a lot of tools. I can even do A/C work which is tricky stuff
>>56051925
Yah I only see these things going up in value due to the cost of living and aggressive immigration here in Canada. I think trailers are a good buy too

>>56052418
Did you sell it for more? Yah I am mechanically inclined but don't have any experience fixing up RVs. I think the interior stuff I can learn though. What do you guys think of buying like a regular cargo van and slapping a high top roof on it? I'm thinking about doing this as newer camper vans sell for a lot more money. Heard the roofs are like 4-5k though but even at that price, I get a cargo van for like a couple of Gs, put a high top roof on it and I could probably sell it for like $30k after adding some interior bits

I envision them as the next step for the bottom middle class that’s getting squeezed out. It could get very normalized for a full time workers to live in them. It’s the stepping stone to the pods

Well they keep going up in value. Obviously they've got to be in decent shape though, that's probably the main thing. Like here in the rust belt it would be challenging but I could buy newer cargo vans and make sure they're clean before building them out

Yah man, that's exactly what I'm thinking. Like these things are going to be 50-100k eventually. Hell, if you want a newer van they're already in that price range if not more. And I'm just talking about a shitty little one. I think the camper vans have more value because they are more practical. Do I have that correct cause some of these camper vans cost just as much as big ass RVs

You are ten years too late kid. Price on rvs has already topped out over the past decade. RV manufacturers have mega ramped up production as well. Overall no one wants old shitty RVs anyway. RVs are a luxury item. They are sold to wealthy persons with plenty of cash to buy whatever they want. On the poorfag end of the spectrum van lifers don't want overpriced premade RVs. They are DIYers that enjoy wasting time building their own RV.
