It's real yield. Nominal (normal) bonds will have their yield determined by the market i.e. buying and selling demand/supply. But that yield is nominal not real, if you get a 1 year bond for 4% and inflation is 2% your real returns are actually only 2%

TIPS work the same way but the yield for them is real yield. So if a tips bond returns 2% you're guaranteed that 2% PLUS whatever inflation is, it's the opposite. It gets added to your bond.

Because of this you can basically determine what the market is expecting and pricing in by looking at the break even point for nominal and tips bonds.
Ten year bond is 4.12% and 10 year TIPS bond is 1.76%
That means the market is pricing in 2.36% average yearly inflation over the next ten years

If inflation ends up higher then tips return more, if inflation is lower than nominal bonds end up paying more.

Ah nice thanks. It sounds like then they underperform regular bonds if inflation comes back down? So you are getting 1.76% real yield on TIPS and 0.92 real on 10 year?

Does the bond adjust while you hold it or are you locked into that 1.76% for entire maturity? If it changes sounds like the bonds will always wash out to be equivalent.

the bond will loose value yes, you can get fucked over by taxes too because the government will expect you to pay the difference on a bond adjusted for tips... that hasn't paid out yet lol

tips etfs get around this because the inflation difference, and the yield, is just paid to you as divys so whenever you get taxed you got a payout anyways

but yes in the case inflation goes down and is lower tips bonds return less than nominal bonds. some investors choose to split their investments (BND and SCHP for example) so that no matter which way inflation goes they are fine

No because a bond is just something that you buy at a price (determined by the market) and once you bought it you get coupons every 6 months and at maturity the government buys your bond back for a fixed price. So only the buying price changes, once it's bought you know how much you'll get at maturity.

However you can sell your bond and the price at which you can sell it depends on the market, and that price is how we get yields.

TIPS get adjusted for inflation before the hit maturity and you get taxed on the capital appreciation, if inflation occurs, BEFORE the bond comes to maturity
>"If you hold individual TIPS in a taxable account, both the inflation adjustment to principal and the interest payments are taxable as ordinary income for federal income tax, although the bonds do not pay out the inflation adjustment to principal until the maturity date. This problem of paying taxes on income not received until a future date is often referred to as the "phantom income" problem."
