Has anyone here essentially opted out?
A huge hassle of my life lately has been trying to make things work while being tied to a specific location due to my office job.
We went full remote during the pandemic and I moved to the mountains, renting because I knew it would come to an end and then of course property values spiked.
Now, I've moved in with my parents who live close to my office and I'm saving my money trying to reach a point where I can afford to buy something decent near my job.

It seems to me that this is like being on a hamster wheel. Work a job to be able to afford the payments on an inflated property near your job location...Why not just make less and spend less? Buy a cheap home in rural Vermont, with a large down payment and low monthly mortgage. I could probably work at the fucking gas station in town at that point to keep up with it, and I basically get to the finish line that many office workers are seeking anyways.

Has anyone done this? Am I missing something?

The reason more men don't do this is status. Because women love status. Applies to literally everything.

in order to afford a """starter home""" in my current location i'd need a promotion to manager ($130-140k/year) and deal with the insane stress caused by that. instead i think im going back to school for a 2 year healthcare degree. $60-80k/year goes a lot further when houses are only $160k vs $400k where i am now.

This was exactly my thought. These are also the types of places where you don't really need to take vacations and stuff. there's so much to enjoy right where you are.

>>55773034
Yeah I'm sure dating as a guy in my 30s would be a lot different in that type of situation. They'd prefer a guy who spendings 65% of his income on rent in a city but appears wealthier.

Yeah thats been a big aspect I've considered. I'm not sure if this is a retarded line of thinking, but I have considered that living a more peaceful lifestyle with more free time could lead to being more present in children's lives? Essentially spend some time outside of school hours supplementing their education with online learning tools. In the end your kids get their shitty public education with perfect grades, and whatever knowledge they gain from the supplemental programs you've had them do?
At the very least this leads to a high GPA, a compelling college admissions essay, and an interesting background. I have a hard time believing a kid with that background couldn't leave high school smarter than the average subrban kid in a "good" school district.
Is that enough for them to get some solid financial aid at a decent college, and to excel with the new resources they'd have access to at that college?

>>55773164
This is kinda what I'm referring to here >>55773204

I think the only tricky thing to supplement education from home is math, but even that wouldn't be too bad if you the parent have decent comprehension and the time to help.

high IQ move is a rural college town, especially if it's a research university. your kid will likely have access to early entry college enrollment or at the very least broke graduate students who would love to make $50/hour under the table, privately tutoring your kid.

Definitely seems like it would have more resources and education for kids compared to other similar COL areas.

I made it out ok by public school was a culture shock and I had to go to sumemr school in 7th grade becuause I failed math. if you dont want your kids to be weird, dont home school them. At least not all the way until high school.

Sup, I'm going to try and respond to everyone's points but if I miss something my bad. I'm responding because I set out to do at 25 what OP is essentially questioning the validity of.
Short answer is you're all correct in different ways. I moved to rural appalachia and havent paid more than 750 per month for any place Ive stayed, including the house I bought in 2021 which is 750 including escrow and taxes. bought for 115k on a 3.5% fha loan so I am not loaded. I was pulling about 50k when I bought, make about 90k now and I am more than comfy. Owning your own home is a status symbol in and of itself so you can take an income hit and offset that with owning a home, especially for immigrant girls, property is class. Rural college town isn't bad, ironically the best schools in the country are Iowa public schools so that works out too. There are still many remote jobs out there especially in industries like finance or accounting where its 100% online anyway. Vermont is overpriced but If that's what you like go for it. I would go for southern KY since Nashville is blowing up atm. Also, a bigger relative city in Appalachia is great like Morgantown or Hagerstown, or Knoxville, or Roanoke. But like I said is schools are a concern Iowa, Nebraska, Kansas, South Dakota all have some good schools. Homes in these places can be super cheap like mine which is great, but I had to put about 20k into it over the next year or so after buying to fix it up and make it nice. The bottom line is, culture and community is everything. There is nothing saying you cant move back to a big city if thats what you want, but for my money like like having disposable income I can invest for passive income, because at the end of the day I do not dream of labor.

Every single school will sexually indoctrinate, groom, and make your child see white people as public enemy #1. There are no "good" schools. Get a smart wife, and have her homeschool your children. The traditional maternal role has always been to educate, not even to do farm work anything like that, we have long since forgotten her role. It's why women like books so much.

I got full remote in 2021. Ended up moving from California to the Midwest and bought a home here.

I'm stuck. None of the jobs here pay anywhere near as much as my WFH job does. My interest rate is below 3%, so buying anything else would nearly double the mortgage payment.

Not sure what to do other than to wait and keep stacking cash. I'm doing better than 95% of people my age which I guess is OK.

I said to the universe -- I'm done. I give up, it's over to you now.
I booked a ticket to India for 2 months and escaped.
