#1. Knowledgeable users got tires of naive first-timers
#2. For whatever (trolling) bad plays are skilled here which burns and jades anons
#3 4chan itself has a status of (regardless if it deserves it or not) intelligence and 'making it' - lots of redditors come and go

>revenue and guidance for the fourth quarter came up short
>revenue and guidance for the fourth quarter came up short
My friend.. You need to realize that the market is forward looking, looking maybe 12-16 months in the future. Stock prices are the total sum of all future cash flows, discounted risk free interest rates, to a one lump sump today.
If future cash flows are projected to fall, then it is worth less than was projected - if people expected $100 for 4th quarter (example) and company comes out and says they'll only make $90, it doesn't matter if for 3rd quarter they said they'll make $90 and they make $90
Market expected them to make $100 in 4th quarter - if they come out and say that no we aren't going to make $100 in 4th quarter after all, of course the share price will fall
Also, you need to realize that revenue and EPS are practically worthless, unless there is a huge miss (or huge beat) on both
What matters is what they say about the future, their guidance - what also matters is the breakdown of their earnings, whether or not they are expanding in certain categories (for example, Amazon - if their web services fall sharply, it matters more than if another part of their business does poorly)
Investors want to see that operating margins are increasing, that sales in important categories are increasing, that profit is increasing
If you hit revenue and EPS targets, but all of your margins are down 15%, and your expenses are up 20%, it doesn't matter if you hit the EPS / margin targets, as clearly the business is in a bad trend, where profits will continue to go down as expense growth is exceeding profit growth
Again, market is forward looking
Also, you need to realize, that the revenue / EPS estimates are complete horse shit hog wash - the analysts are paid by the companies they cover - if they give unfavorable estimates or price targets, they lose their job - it's just like the ratings agencies, where if Moody's gives you a bad rating

then you just go to Fitch, or Standard and Poor's
and they all know this, so they just give a favorable rating.
In other words, the people who set the bar for the company to beat with EPS / revenue, are people whose self interest is for the company to beat EPS / revenue. They intentionally set the bar lower, so that it can be beat.
This is not impressive, and why "Why is the stock falling?? They beat!!!" is a thing - investors see right through it, and are only interested in the bottom line

This was the issue last year, where so many things were "coming up short" compared to how they did in 2021, but that was a horseshit comparison because everyone paying attention knew that things were extraordinarily elevated in 2021. Companies making 8 billion fucking dollars every quarter are by all measures doing just fine, and unless something insane happens we can pretty safely assume that they will continue to do just fine.

https://www.forexlive.com/news/i-dont-think-there-was-a-case-for-a-50-bps-rate-hike-today-bailey-20230803/
ECB and now BOE have completely pussy-footed out, where they are saying
>NOOOO OUR ECONOMIES ARE DECLINING!!!
>BUT INFLATION IS TOO HIGH!!!
>BUT, BUT, THE ECONOMY!!!
>MORE DOVISH, MORE DOVISH!!!
>SAVE THE ECONOMY, WHO CARES ABOUT INFLATION!!!
>SAVE THE ECONOMY!!!
they have buckled. they are pathetic, and are faggots, and they will make the crisis worse, as inflation surges higher. They didn't have the balls (Lagarde has them, but not metaphorically) to keep raising, keep hawkish rhetoric, and ensure the job gets done.
>Why does this matter?
Because now we have THREE currencies all working to make the dollar go higher
we have yen falling, due to Japan still not buckling in YCC / bond buying
we have euro falling, due to ECB buckling
and we have pound falling, due to BOE buckling
all 3 currencies make up the DXY basket
in other words, the dollar is going to continue to go up
This is bearish.
Everyone expected ECB and BOE (especially) to continue hiking, to continue to be aggressive in their fight against inflation, as inflation in their nations is still extremely high, and they are behind the curve in the tightening cycle compared to the Fed - that the Fed would pause / cut, while other central banks would continue to hike - this made their currencies appreciate against the dollar, and fueled the stock market rally. Short the dollar was the most crowded trade of the last year - now it must unwind
Dollar should continue to rise, barring a new monetary policy announcement from ECB or Fed
Stocks will remain under pressure as long as the dollar is rising

Just look at Sweden and Germany... absolutely pathetic. People are beyond "overmortaged" and guess what? All these loans are due for a re-financing to significantly higher levels. Consumers are about to get shafted in the EU.

Sorry that was mean. Let me explain further. Since stocks are priced in dollars, if a given stock is worth $100 in today dollars, and dollars in a month are worth 5% more, the stock will only be worth 1/1.05 of what it is today (95.24 in this example), assuming all else stays equal. It has nothing to do with confidence in the US and everything to do with buying power.

We should also thank the Brits for their noble sacrifice. Them accepting hyperinflation may unironically save the US from the same fate.

>>The dollar is getting stronger
>>Which is why people aren't going to invest in the US stock market
when the dollar grows in strength relative to other currencies, it becomes more expensive for foreign investors to buy US stocks
for example, I'm a Japanese investor. I have 1,000,000 yen to invest. If I want to buy US stocks, I have to first sell my yen and buy dollars, to use the dollars to buy the stocks.
Let's say that the exchange rate is 143 - 1,000,000 yen would give you ~$7000
let's say that the yen strengthens (the dollar falls) and the exchange rate is only 100
that same 1,000,000 yen would give you $10,000
Can you buy more stocks with $10,000 or $7,000?
This is the direct instant impact
The bigger picture is that when the dollar rises, corporate profits fall. 30% of S&P earnings come from overseas. If the dollar rises, it is more expensive for foreign consumers to buy US goods and services - the higher a price is, the less demanded of that item, the less quantity sold of that item. This dents corporate profits
Furthermore, if the dollar is appreciating, anything they sell in a foreign currency they have to convert back to the dollar (by selling that currency and buying dollars) and they lose money through this exchange
a stronger dollar also makes it harder for all foreign countries, institutions, individuals to service their dollar denominated debt - they have to pay more to pay their debt (as it is more expensive to buy dollars) -- this results in a decrease in consumption (which hurts stocks)

???
I keep hearing you say this in /smg/ lmao. What the fuck are you talking about.
Prior to the 2022 crash, we were warning non-stop that the Fed need to raise interest rates to fight inflation would cause the dollar to sharply rise, which would make stocks fall.
The DXY rose from 95 to 112, the S&P500 fell 20%, Nasdaq 33%
>durr currencies don't matter!!!
>durr currency moves have no predictive power!!!
Seriously, what the fuck are you talking about

HUH, would you look at that, DXY just went green
HOW UNUSUAL

Look man, you post wrong info in this thread and I'm going to correct you. Your DXY thesis is wrong. Simple as.
You don't have to listen, you don't have to reply.
But everyone who's read the full conversation knows that you're wrong. I'm posting for the few people that might be deluded by your rambling because they see a fat wall of text acting serious and assume he must be a smart dude. I know full well that you'll never accept it. I've dealt with plenty of people in my life incapable of admitting their errors.

If you want to see some data that's actually bearish, check out 30y TIPS. Just spiked near 2%. As long as that's rising, there'll be pressure on stocks. That's the real yield.

Lmaooo. Anon. Anyone reading the conversation knows you're a fucking retard.
Everybody, and I mean everybody, who isn't a kindergartener, understands that
>Higher yields are bearish
>Stronger dollar is bearish
You are literally the only retard in /smg/ who doesn't understand this. Literally.
Even the retarded redd*t newfag zoomer tourists understand this. You are literally worse than the redd*t newfag zoomer tourists.

Seethe more retard. Seethe more.
Higher yields are bearish.
A stronger dollar is bearish.
Continue to believe in your asinine delusions if you want. You're clearly retarded, clearly past convincing.
I will not try and convince a flat Earther that the Earth isn't flat. It's not worth it. You cannot speak sense into a retard.

He's retarded. Genuinely. Had a 2 hour conversation with him yesterday. Unironically, this is what he said
>SEE, INTEREST RATES ARE HIGHER NOW THAN THEY WERE IN 2018
>SEE, THE DOLLAR IS HIGHER NOW THAN IT WAS IN 2018
>THE MARKET IS HIGHER NOW THAN IT WAS IN 2018
>CLEARLY, HIGHER YIELDS ARE BULLISH FOR STOCK PRICES!
>CLEARLY, A STRONGER DOLLAR IS BULLISH FOR STOCK PRICES!
he's literally, and I mean literally retarded
I wouldn't overuse this term literally, if I didn't mean it, literally.

I convinced a flat Earther the Earth isn't flat by saying, "If the Earth is flat how can astrology be real." You have to just hit them with something even more retarded, and it'll work even if it's for the wrong reason. Like when something breaks so you hit it with a hammer and it starts working again.

Yes, I will never understand how you are so retarded. Genuinely. I will never understand how you are so retarded but so ego'd out. How someone could be so wrong, but so sure of themselves. I will never understand how someone could be this retarded, how someone could think that higher yields are bullish, that a stronger dollar is bullish for stock prices.
You're right, I will never understand your retardation.
