In the Soviet Union, any discussion of the famine was banned entirely. Ukrainian historian Stanislav Kulchytsky stated the Soviet government ordered him to falsify his findings and depict the famine as an unavoidable natural disaster, to absolve the Communist Party and uphold the legacy of Stalin.

They were stealing land and killing Kulaks in the late 1910's all the way through the 1930's. The Holodomor was just the grand finale.

My gg-grandfather was Western Ukrainian (Russian at that time as Ukraine didn't exist), but he lived in Eastern Poland on a big farm about 5 minutes from the Ukrainian border.

He was killed near the end of the Russian Civil War when he wouldn't give up his land to the Communist forces. His wife and son (my g-grandfather) fled the country after that.
