The main character is never no.1
He is always undervalued and overpowered. Everyone is always shitting on him except for the few loyal friends he has whose own success and narratives completely depend upon his determination and constant progression. As he defeats challenger after challenger each one bends the knee and admits they were wrong and that they learned a valuable lesson from the mc. Once the mc is off screen they speak to their own side-kicks and waifus about how the old generation must make way for the new and they can finally rest knowing the future is in good hands. And even in the final scenes the mc is almost never recognized for his role in the events which unfolded in the world around him despite being the solution almost every time. Nor does he stop once the credits roll, instead it is always implied that he has more to achieve and more adventures to go on. Almost as if the creators are saying that his story has only just begun.
