I was by her side throughout a portion of the settlement case, which took about three years. I'm pretty educated and hold a respectable job at a non-profit in the economic development space, and I can assure you the way these lawyers conduct themselves with my gf is extremely unprofessional. I told her to demand itemized receipts and any form of writing that proves she preemptively agreed to those charges. Look up to see what your state's laws are about recording conversations. I believe Florida is a one-party consent state, which means you can record any phone calls between her and her lawyer without their knowledge.

Do your own research and re-read everything you've signed between them so they don't sue you for that later.

That's kind of how it goes. I'm suing a previous employer to the tune of $200,000 for not providing wages they owed. The breakdown basically goes like this:

1. 40% of any winnings to your lawyer
2. 30% (approximately) tax
3. Settlement is the most likely outcome, which means I'll probably only get like $120,000 and that would be an optimistic outcome.

So doing the math on that, I'll probably only come out of it with $50k, which still isn't bad, but yeah. Everyone takes their pound of flesh.

On the other hand, your lawyer works for "free" in the sense that you don't have to pay him up front for his services, and he only takes a cut if you actually win. I agreed to all of it because if nothing comes of it, I still make money I wouldn't have had before for basically zero work besides filling out some forms. Pretty low risk to me.
