Because it's cheap to do. I used to do this back in high-school/college. I'd buy the $50 gumball machines (Now they run between $100-150) from Sam's Club and stick them in barber shops. Most places recognize that this makes virtually no money, takes up little space, and offers an additional comfort to their customers so they often let you set up your machine for free. Bulk gumballs come in at like $0.05/gumball and they sell at $0.25 so you make an 80% margin. When I did it I'd average like $10/mo/machine which is basically nothing. I kept spending my McWagie paychecks on these and built up to having over 50 of them. Working 1 day a month for around $500/mo as a high-school/college kid was pretty great. Keeping a clean P&L sheet I was able to eventually sell my route + equipment + inventory for $10k.
