I seriously don't understand why coding is ultra hyped around here on biz.

You'll often to see people saying, "making $300k wfh and still chiling!" - the truth is some of these are true, while the other half of these are larps.

Take this from a former employed codemonkey - unless you have a straight up PASSION for coding (aka you wish to code for fun rather than sleep at night), then avoid coding like the fucking plague.

For starters, if you want to code for a corporation, get ready for backstabbing snakes for coworkers, extremely out of touch management who throw impossible deadlines on you like candy, on-call work that'll guarantee you'll get no sleep, having to work with teams that are completely off base and ruin projects all the time, and worst of all...the pay is fucking garbage for the level of work that you do.

I can write a whole novel on the hell I went through during my coding days, but I can't fit everything into one post.

Software work for me is only acceptable now that I barely deliver any work product and get paid $250k/year.
If I get laid off or terminated I'm switching to "avoid like the fucking plague" mode and not taking another eng role. They're suck ass and most people in staff or director positions seem to have pudgy build at best and many are straight obese. There's the occassional guy in a high level role that looks decent, but it stands out when I see it.
At least I made nearly $900k off of this career, so it's not like I'm leaving empty handed.

I'm an ME who's in office 2x a week. I work in auto. I need to be present to review test assemblies and monitor testing. But otherwise everything can be done from home. Executing drawing changes, DFMEAs, test reports, supplier communication -- all this can be done from home.

Pre-2022 when the big tech firms where pretty much always hiring, anyone with an engineering degree or masters in CS, who was slightly above midwit, could get a job at google, ms, facebook, etc. by reading "cracking the coding interview" and maybe knowing a few guys there. These jobs paid $100k+ base, or $200k+ in san fran staring and $200k+ or $400k san fran after a few years. Because the big guys did this it raised the standards for all other coding jobs. If you worked at a smaller company you could make 7+ figures from stock incentives when the stock mooned. Now that big tech has frozen hiring these days may have come to end, but it was truly an incredibly easy career while it lasted comparable to working in finance right before 2008.

I applied to a ton of SWE and PM roles to see if I could drum up a call right now and it's pretty barren.

Now, if I was actually going hard, I would be hitting up my network for referrals and trying a few other tricks, but cold apply is radio silence for me right now. I don't think any amount of co-ops will change that.
