lived here most of my life, better than most big cities, but not cheap. i make 120k and live comfortably with a 350k mortgage, which i still see townhomes in decent areas (north metro) show up in that price range.

In my experience atlanta is the worst of all cities statistically speaking. The pay vs cost of living is some of the worst there is. The traffic is insane. It's all because the city is like 60% black and 80-90% of atlanta proper (areas within the beltway) are within range of black crime. So you either pay a ton to live in one of the few safe areas or you do what everyone else does which is commute 2 hours a day from somewhere outside of the city limits.

All the good areas of atlanta's metro are about an hour north (without traffic) and they are very nice areas. Atlanta is so bad that its major business hub is trying to recede and form its own city. Imagine lower Manhatten breaking away from NYC because the rest of NYC is that bad.

Alpharetta/Johns Creek itself is very nice, but expensive since the downtown and Avalon areas are growing so fast, and their school system is very high tier which attracts a lot of foreign families with big bank accounts.
Roswell, Duluth, Peachtree Corners, and Cumming are also nice neighboring towns that are more affordable. Sandy Springs and Dunwoody are also good options if you want to be closer to Atlanta proper while still having an easy commute to Alpharetta

There is no "nice" part of Detroit. Gilbert invested a bunch into downtown building up whatever Illitch didn't already own and it's not nearly enough for white people to move there, because the government is still corrupt and you're surrounded by shit for miles.
