Yes, people don't want to admit it but this is unequivocally the most reliable way to "make it". The S&P500 specifically has made a 6.3% average annual return adjusted for inflation for the past 50 years. Compounding is serious stuff.
Of course if you could get into a higher paying job you'd be able to "make it" a lot faster and end up with more money (provided you lived the same lifestyle) so that's still something to aim for.
