Looking at past generations and their hardships (greatest generation and the great depression they grew up in) the only way to escape this is to turn the whole world upside down again through massive global war.

You will either survive the war and live in the prosperous 1950s style "happy days" era that comes afterwards, or you will die in the war and have nothing.
