I haven't played a video game for over 10 years kek. Last time I did it was a CoD game on an xBox 360. I was more into them when i was young but i get bored with them quickly as an adult. Same with all TV content and most movies. I'm more into what's going on in the real world now.

I barely played any vidya in the past, but a rough breakup recently put me into a nasty depression and I ended up becoming a giga vidya consoomer in all my spare time. Now I'm desperately trying to find ways to quit, and after having uninstalled and reinstalling steam about 20 times so far this year, I can finally say I have a problem.

Someone on /fit/ just recommended the AVRT method to me, so I'm gonna read that book ("Rational Recovery" by Jack Trimpey) so I'll give that a go I guess.

I'd argue competitive games are just as bad as porn. Playing single player games is equivalent to watching a movie or listening to music, totally harmless. TV shows and anime are mostly trash and if you always find yourself watching one, it's 100% a coping mechanism and/or looking to fill the void. I wouldn't knock someone for doing something time consuming as long as they have their shit together, but if you prioritize doing mindless shit over fixing your life, you have a serious problem. Time management is key. Some people just get shit done no matter what and will even forgo sleep to get things done.

The worst part is that I've done extensive research on dopamine and can name all the horrific effects sustained spikes can cause. I just know that dopamine receptor upregulation takes weeks to months to play out, and that period can be hell on earth. Just need to take the leap I guess

I can even argue that video games are worse than porn in some regards (both are poison). The main threat video games pose is the sense of progression and accomplishment they give, particularly if you get hooked on an RPG. As I'm finding out, if you train your own brain that the intense dopamine releases you give can be attained through low risk behavior, you're going down a really bad path which can seriously fuck up how you emotionally view reward and risk. You essentially get trapped in a low risk/low reward quadrant, where any adult task becomes like the pits of hell in terms of effort required (why study 4 hours when I'm literally killing dragons?) . The good news is that this of course can be healed, but the process isn't easy. Porn does the same risk/reward damage, but with your ability to talk to women (because why ever talk to a chick when you're busting nuts in 20 10/10 females every night according to your brain).

Dopamine is a tricky molecule. It has the capacity to make us mega chads of work ethic, or annihilte our work ethic. I'm working on readjusting mine. WAGMI
